Isiah Stanback (1 Viewer)

Felix Jones and Austin have the best shot at KR this year also.
They should let Felix return kicks as a rookie. Pacman and Felix were given the first shot at kick return duties when camp broke. As of yesterday Austin and Stanback were lining up as the first team kick returners. Long way to go.

Jones praises Stanback

Jerry Jones is praising Isaiah Stanback, according to the Dallas Morning News. Jones said, "Look at him. That's a big guy. There's another part of him that we saw in the fall that just absolutely goes out there and makes some of the most phenomenal, athletic plays. He's got the hands. He's got the natural instincts to go up. He's straightaway fast, but he's got that make-you-miss stuff to go."

Our View: Stanback still needs to learn the ropes of playing receiver as a converted quarterback, but Jones believes he has big potential, and will be worth the wait. Stanback is worth targeting in keeper leagues following Jones' comments.

can you expand on that a little bit? Jones has fallen short of very high expectations from his workout numbers. He has ended up being stiffer than anyone thought he'd be, and he doesn't show much courage or polish as a WR. Stanback was too hurt to fully work out leading up to the draft, and I can tell, he's definitely not a stiff. Is this just shorthand for "converted QB that won't work out as a WR" or is there more to it than that?

yeah it was just another converted QB thingI have my doubts that he can even crack the lineup and see the playing field as a WR thoughETA and if I could go back in time and coach Jax, Jones would be tried as a CB or S/outfielder.

He has fielded some kicks with Austin, Choice, Pac and others. They are really trying to get him comfortable at the WR position. So far he's looking good. Michael Irvin was out early in camp teaching the WRs how to seperate and other techniques. Isiah is difenately one to watch very has been giving him much praise lately.

I'd be shocked and disapointed if Austin was used on KR's. He is about as elusive as my dead grandmother.
A Clip from Rob Phillops Staff Writer of DallasCowboys.com:
Third-year veterans Sam Hurd and Miles Austin also are competing for time behind Owens and Crayton. Both have been impressive; Hurd has shown more polish on his routes, and Austin is a 216-pound rocket who can return kickoffs.

Stanback has fielded kicks with Austin in practice, but both want to use their speed to become contributors on offense.
Your dead granny moves like a rocket?

25.5 yards a return last year? He was good. He was also very close to taking it to the house a couple times. Not doing so had nothing to do with agility, but just not beating an angle or two. I like him in the role. I'd like to see Felix take it though. He's a great kick returner. Of the top 50 kick returners in the NFL last year with more than 20 attempts Austin finished in the top 10. He was better than Tedd Ginn, Dante Hall, Terrence McGee, Ahmad Bradshaw and a few other respected return guys. He didn't just do okay, he did a very good job in the role. Felix is probably better. Stanback is an unknown. Austin guarantees they will at least have a high quality return game.

The Stanback Hype Builds

OXNARD, Calif. - Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones wasn't drawing a direct comparison between then-rookie Isaiah Stanback and his most dangerous, accomplished wide receiver.

But the similarities in size, speed and separation were so pronounced that Jones couldn't help but think of some guy named Owens.

"He had or three (plays) which you had to say, 'Is that Terrell? Who is that?'" Jones said when he watched Stanback last year in practice.

I never said she was fast, I said she was more elusive.I agree he's fast, but he never once juked anybody or made a move to break it long. He just catches and runs in a straight line and whatever happens, happens.

Statistically he was fine, and I guess I shouldn't really complain too much. He could be worse, and be one of those guys who dance around too much, but I just think the Cowboys can do better here.

This dude is possibly not going to make the squad.
Shocked if he doesn't make the team. He is a Jerry guy. Actually, zero chance he doesn't make it.
I just don't like it. Like I said in the cowboys thread a pure athlete just doesn't cut it in the NFL anymore. There are too many guys that can return kicks/punts on this squad and too many up and coming WR3/4 types that have more promise. Sometimes the ability to do it all reasonably well doesn't outweigh the ability to do one thing better than all others.
