Jaguars Season rides on Titans Game (1 Viewer)

Yes, I know it's only Week 10 and it's the third week of a three week road trip, but consider -

- Cleveland's schedule has them looking as a wild-card favorite.

- They're already a game behind Tennessee and they were beaten badly at home by the Titans in Week 1

- Stroud has been suspended four games for a "supplement".

- Two Jags were arrested early Saturday morning for resisting arrest (Durant) and DUI when passing out at a McDonald's drive-thru(Collier).

- Khalif Barnes was suspended for the first half last week for "breaking team rules".

-After this road trip they come back for two home games against possible playoff teams (SD,BUF).

None of this bodes well for the Jags. They could (and personally think will) have Garrard back. But this is the week that they have to decide if they're going to the wildcard or if they're looking at 7-9 or worse. A loss here could start a long downward spiral. So pick your cliche. It's gut-check time, now-or-never, yadda yadda yadda.

This week could define the Jags season.

What season?

The Jags are in free fall right now and yes, a win over the titans would help to stop the bleeding but I doubt it makes any real differince. First of all, I doubt they beat them, but even if they do this season is toast already. They could easily lose the next 4 games(@TEN SD BUF @IND). This season has 7-9/8-8 written all over it.

The team is just poorly run. Del Rio is an idiot. Every big name guy on the defense is playing like ###. They got old real quick. Cut Matt Jones. Draft a real WR, you know, not a white QB. They need to throw an 7 year, 50 million deal at Cower and start praying.

And most people say he is a top 10 coach. I never thought he was good. The ONLY thing he really does good is fool his players into thinking they are the best team and get no respect..I like NE more than Jax.. That says ALOT

That's why I think the TEN game is so important. Fisher has pwned the Jags and Del Rio. But I would think that if you come out with guns blazing, it would be after your owner publicly rips the team's discipline. Indy's an L. If they win this week, I think they probably split the BUF & SD games in some fashion. If they lose this week, then I think they've officially rolled over and lose all four.

I think it's funny that JDR gets all of the blame, while the guy doing the drafting, Shack Harris skates. Yeah, I agree the WRs stink and Matt Jones is a bust. There's no way that Cowher comes to Jacksonville (and Weaver pays that kind of money.)

Sorry man, but the Titans are not losing this weekend. If they put Garrard in there he may end up out for a few more weeks when our D-line gets done with him. If the Titans win this game they are looking good for wildcard, they will play it intense.

Jags ML this weekend. LenWhale will not be able to amass anything against the Jax front 4. I would take my chances through the air w/ VY back there. Brian Williams coming back for the Jags could be a big lift as well.

It'll be interesting to see which defense steps up given how both could be minus key players. Stroud is definitely out for the Jags and Henderson got hurt in practice yesterday. For Tennessee, Haynesworth is questionable. I still don't think many points will be scored here but if all three of these players are out it should help both offenses.

- They're already a game behind Tennessee and they were beaten badly at home by the Titans in Week 1
They only lost by 3 points in week 1 to Tennessee, and that is when the Jaguars had no kicker. I think they would have won if they had had someone to kick field goals for them during the game. Anyway, I don't consider 10 to 13 (with no field goal kicker even) being beaten badly.

you know, it's amazing. many considered jax to be the 5th best team in football going into the indy game.

garrard was on fire, the defense was on fire, the running game was turning it on.

all of that was true up until the point garrard went down in that game.

indy was up 7-0. jax held them scoreless for the 1st qtr. garrard was driving the team down to tie up the game.

garrard goes down. insert quinn gray.

1st pass: int.

the next 3 times he drops back to pass resulted in a platter of sacks, ints, or lost yardage.

no one will acknowledge it now, but jax very much had a chance in that game. i wonder if people realize just how good a team must be to beat the colts with quinn gray as their QB.

then they gut out a win on the road in tampa.

then get destroyed by the saints in NO.

i don't think this qualifies as a "free fall". their season does likely rest on this game (b/c of the intense competition for an afc wildcard).

this titans team is good, but their passing game is pathetic.

lest we forget, they ran for about 300 yards on the jags in week 1 and barely eaked out a 3 point win.

the jags D took it on the chin last week, but the titan offense is certainly not the saints.

if garrard plays, he'll be, by far, the best QB on the field.

people have very short memories. the jags are very good with garrard and it seems like garrard will be back.

this game has all the makings of a reminder to the world of how good jax can be.

The scoreboard might not show it but the Titans controlled that game. They came into town and punched what is usually a very physical team in the nose. They outrushed the jags 282 - 72. The Jags had problems sustaining a drive against the Titans. Their only TD was a beutiful long toss to Broussard.

This season is a wash. Their two immediate problems aside from Garrard not being on the field are:

1. They can't put much, if any, pressure on the opposing teams QB without blitzing. They have been, and will continue to, be picked apart through the air.

2. No receiving threats. This, as everyone has known, is no new problem. One dimensional teams can't win consistently, even if the run game is solid.

These problems can't be fixed this year. Thus, a big slide to finish the year is inevitable, IMO.

And the loss to the Titans in week one was not even close. You can point to a 3 point loss, but the scoreboard didn't tell the story. That margin should have been greater than what it was. The Jags were stomped on in that game.

Long term, the problems are even greater.

- They have a front office (James Harris, specifically) that can't draft or sign the proper talent needed in order for the team to progress. To add to this, the front office still carries the mentality that the young players will grow into their roles. This hasn't happened as often as needed to grow as a team. Well-spent money on some key free agents would have been nice, if only they (he) would recognize the talent gap that exists at certain positions. The character problems are well-documented.

- They have a coach that doesn't consistently have his team ready to play. In keeping with this, Del Rio has seemingly fired god-knows how many assistants with similar results. Who is left to blame but the head coach?

- They have revenue problems. This, soon, will become the biggest problem of all.

I hope I am wrong about all of this. Sadly, I'm pretty sure that I am not.

i can't disagree with most of that (although i really want to).i do think the passing game was coming along before garrard went down. they weren't lighting it up with big plays in the passing game, but i thought garrard and northcutt were certainly effective enough to prevent them from being "one-dimensional" (and certainly better than the titans passing game, but nobody seems to think the titans' inability to throw the ball is a big issue).i was encouraged by the progress of the passing game (mostly garrard/northcutt) before garrard went down.

Probably going to be without both DTs this week. Certainly without Stroud. Henderson left practice Thursday on a cart, soooo.....

1. Haynesworth will play.

2. I don't think Garrard does. He's iffy at best and having him play vs TN could put him out for a long time. I don't think he wants any part of Albert or KVB.

3. I think MackTruck (LenDale) does just fine. Won't be easy, but he think he gets his.

4. Frankly, I think VY is on the move this week. I think he runs more and I think he passes on the move, they get him on the edge with run/pass option. I think this might be VY's best passing game of the year so far.

5. If Henderson doesn't play, I don't think it is that close.

Titans 23-13.

Del Rio: Henderson OKDespite leaving practice on a cart, the d-lineman isn't hurt, the coach says.By MICHAEL C. WRIGHT, The Times-UnionJaguars defensive tackle John Henderson exited the practice field on a cart Thursday, but the team said he's fine and will start Sunday at Tennessee. Henderson practiced Friday and isn't listed on the Jaguars' final injury report headed into Sunday's game. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio did confirm, however, that the team spent extra time this week working to improve Henderson's conditioning. "I put the [injury] report out, and John's not even on it," Del Rio said. "Other than missing practice earlier in the week - a team decision we already announced - there's nothing else to report." Because of the Jaguars' relative thinness at defensive tackle with Marcus Stroud out the next four weeks as he serves a suspension, the team expects Henderson to handle a larger workload for the next few weeks. Other than Henderson, Rob Meier - who will start in the place of Stroud - Grady Jackson and rookie Derek Landri, the Jaguars have few options at defensive tackle. Defensive end Paul Spicer can play tackle, but he'll likely spend more time at his natural spot this week. So in preparation for the extra work, Henderson has spent the week running extra wind sprints at practice. The Jaguars listed him on the injury report as limited on Thursday because of a "team decision." The team doesn't have to disclose the reasoning for Henderson's limited participation Thursday, and according to NFL injury-reporting protocol, a player missing because of a "team decision" means he isn't injured. Henderson was excused from practice Wednesday for what the team called "personal reasons," and he wasn't available Friday for comment during the Jaguars' open locker-room period. Solid play along the defensive line seems to be a focal point for the Jaguars heading into Tennessee. In their season-opening 13-10 victory, the Titans ripped Jacksonville for 282 rushing yards, which remains a team-worst performance in terms of rushing yards allowed for the Jaguars. Typically, Jaguars defensive linemen participate in 30 to 35 snaps per game, with Stroud usually playing the most, in the 50-snap range (Stroud played 55 snaps last week). Henderson participated in 42 snaps last week at New Orleans and 35 the week before at Tampa Bay. With Stroud out of the lineup, the Jaguars need Henderson to play in the 50-snap range for the next few weeks.

It looks like Gray will be starter againBy MICHAEL C. WRIGHT, The Times-UnionIt's looking more likely that Quinn Gray will make his third consecutive start at quarterback for the Jaguars this week. sponsored linksGMC Pro Grade ChallengeBecause of David Garrard's high ankle sprain, Gray has started the past two weeks. Garrard was listed on Friday's injury report as questionable. "I took all the reps this week, and coach [Jack Del Rio] told me that most likely, it'll be me [starting Sunday against the Tennessee Titans]," Gray said.

Maybe its just me but, The Titans are the better team..If you watch both of them play thats what most would see. The Jag D hasnt been as good as its been and they still cant move the ball that well. They should run 40+ times a game. I dont care who the starting QB is

wtf is up with this "punched them in the face/nose/teeth/mouth" cliche around here lately? when did this become popular?

I'm really surprised how the game turned out. I started this thread expecting to come in here to give a post mortem on the Jags season. Obviously, the Titans' defense is different without Haynesworth. Still, I was suprised at how the Jags were able to put together 2 first-half scoring drives that were each 13 plays. Defensively, it looked to me like the Jags were bringing more pressure on Young with more blitzes. More importantly, the Jags held Tennessee to 62 yards rushing.

Random league. Saints get beat down by the 0-8 Rams after schooling Jax. Green Bay BLANKS ADP after he sets a new rushing record. As far as this game goes, no Haynesworth, no awesome rush defense.

i'm here.the jags have plenty of issues (like pass defense, which VY wasn't really good enough to exploit), but they shouldn't be written off (as i suspect they have been over the past 3 weeks).the titans are good too. just not as good as people were starting to think (or better than the jags).this game would've been more competitive if the titans could learn not to jump offsides.quinn gray could've almost passed for an nfl QB today.the jags run D stepped up.the jags pass D appeared vulnerable, but VY only seemed to be able to capitalize on short passes. the few times they tried to go deep, VY didn't look very good doing it.it was a great game. the jags and titans are similar teams (good running game, non-explosive passing game, rely on D).

Should be an interesting game this coming week vs Chargers. Two teams fighting for the playoffs and both teams head coaches under fire.

Looks like Garrard is back this week. I applaud the job done by Quinn Gray; he did just enough to go 2-1 on the three game road trip. The pass rush yesterday was much improved and needs to keep up in order for the Jags to remain competitive.

if you'd told me that the jags would go 2-1 (2-2 if you count the colts disaster) against 3 playoff contenders with quinn gray, i'd have signed up for that in a heartbeat. gray actually looked pretty decent yesterday (he was even able to complete those pesky screen passes), but, of course, it's going to be great to get garrard back.

Jeremy Mincey was great yesterday. This is a guy whose NFL career was left for dead, but yesterday he was a difference maker the Jags really needed with Bobby McCray being so disappointing this year. The real Reggie Hayward also showed up for the first time since his injury.

The thing to remember about the Saints loss is that Brian Williams didn't play. Old Aaron Glenn got abused big time in that game.

Jax would be the #1 Wild Card if the playoffs started today.

Me too.His screen passes were good. Comparing those to his 13 feet high screen passes in Tampa is like night and day.

With or without his interceptions this year, Brian Williams has played at a very high level. His physical presence can't be understated.
