Jaguars WR Depth Chart Remains Unsettled

Alan Schmadtke, Orlando Sentinel - [Full Article]

Jacksonville Jaguars HC Jack Del Rio said the WR position is wide open for his team. "I think you can see by the way we're playing guys that we're attempting to give everybody a fair shake, a real thorough evaluation," he said. "Not only have we done that in practice throughout the OTAs [organized team activities], throughout the camp but also during the games. In time, we'll make the decisions we need to make and go forward, but that's a work in progress." Jacksonville rotated its receivers with the first-team offense in its last preseason game: Dennis Northcutt, Charles Sharon and Matt Jones on one series, Mike Walker and Reggie Williams on another.

Who will emerge as starters 1 and 2 from this mess???

All of these guys are available on our waiver wire and i would like to grab the # 1 guy for wr depth.

Any homers have any insight??? Thanks.

Don’t get sucked into whatever residual Matt Jones hype might remain from the pre-fantasy-draft Matt Jones mania of 2006. Jones isn’t a good route runner and doesn’t have good hands. Actually, I hate pretty much all of the Jacksonville receivers. It wouldn’t surprise me if sleeper Charles Sharon, who’s looked good in preseason action, won a roster spot and earned some playing time ahead of better-known teammates Jones, Reggie Williams or Ernest Wilford. Sharon is just too deep a sleeper for me to recommend as a draft option, but remember the name — he might make a viable in-season waiver pickup

per PFW.

What's going on with Marcedes Lewis? Is he doing anything at all?

He was great at UCLA. If he could get back to that I could see him being one of the primary receiving targets.

The receivers continue to be a work in progress, though Ernest Wilford and Dennis Northcutt are separating themselves from the rest of the pack and have clearly locked down the two starting spots for the time being. Reggie Williams, a first-round pick in the 2004 draft, continues to fall on the depth chart and is in imminent danger of not making the final roster. Williams did not have any passes directed his way in the Tampa Bay game, which saw 11 different Jaguars make at least one catch, including five wide receivers.

The Jaguars put heavy emphasis on improving the passing game during the team's spring/summer workouts, and continued that trend when training camp opened the end of July. Thus far, the extra time put in is working out in their favor.

In their first two preseason games, Jaguars quarterbacks have connected on 45 passes in 66 attempts (67.2%), good for 550 yards and no interceptions.

Thus far, the passing game has carried the Jaguars offense as the rushing game has been held to 173 yards in two games.

WR Dennis Northcutt, an unrestricted free agent signed from Cleveland, was added to the Jaguars roster to provide speed and experience. It's worked out well for both sides as Northcutt has moved ahead of the younger receivers into a starting role.

WR Charles Sharon was acquired as an undrafted rookie free agent last year who spent the first 10 weeks on the practice squad before moving to the 53-man roster the final six games of the season. He showed enough potential for the club to keep him around and now he's challenging some of the veterans for a backup role.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: WR Ernest Wilford — At the start of training camp, Wilford's name was tossed around as much as Reggie Williams and Matt Jones with regard to one of the veteran receivers possibly missing out on the final roster. But Wilford has had a strong camp and looked especially sharp last week and in Saturday's game with Tampa Bay. He finished with three catches for 29 yards and looked solid in his grabs and runs afterward. He's now locked into one of the starting spots, while Williams continues his free-fall from his starting role of a year ago.

WR Mike Walker (third) came up empty in the Tampa Bay game after a three-catch night the previous week against Miami.

In other news:

Water is wet.

The Earth is round.

The sun is bright.

This is a huge mess, and I'm goign to watch the game, but I think the value in this spot is whomever goes last of the options.

Jaguars | Williams on the bubble

Adam Schefter, of the NFL Network, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Reggie Williams could be cut from the team Monday, Aug. 27, or Tuesday, Aug. 28.

Schefter isn't always right but he does deserve to be paid attention to these days.

Most definitely...he's the guy when it comes to breaking news now...his NFL Network connection trumps what other reporters can do.

I believe when it is all said in done it will be Matt Jones and Earnest Wilford with Dennis Northcutt as the slot guy...

BustedKnuckles you're a fool if you think Matt Jones has bad hands, he's got the best hands on the team.

It's funny everybody wants to beat on Matt Jones when the guy is entering his third season in the NFL having been a college Quarterback AND he lead the team in receiving yards last season even though he was injured for most of it... AND he's got Byron Leftwich at Quarterback (You know that slow as molasses guy with the ridiculous throwing motion who never finishes a season?). Matt Jones will continue to improve (as he has in his first two seasons), drafting any other Jaguar receiver before him is a mistake.

Call me crazy but everyone knew he was going to be a project when he was drafted and he's right on schedule. The guy is 6'6 1/2 with a 3.36 40 and 40" vertical and terrific hands (his best asset). Stop the madness!

The Jag WR corps has been one of the biggest collections of wasted talent... This is exactly why I've tried my best to avoid this mess...

Schefter = new MortI'm banking on Matt Jones this year out of this group. It's do or die for him this year.

SPEED!!!!Wilford and Northcutt are the best receivers and will be the starters.

Is it me, or do you blame the qb play for alot of Jax wr issues. I watched alot of the GB game and Leftwich still has that huge windup that telegraphs where he is going with the ball. I value reggie williams more after he gets cut.

If Williams gets cut where do you think he goes?I say Seattle (back to Washington) where he played his college days plus Seattle could use another tall talented wr since Stevens and DJax are no longer there.Maybe Philly, Cleveland, SD, HoustonJust a hunch. I think Seattle would be all over him.

As a Williams owner, I sure hope so. That coaching staff is totally clueless. Bustwich could solve the world's energy problems if they just set him up on a hill in California and let him do that ridiculous windup windmill all day long.

Exactly. Don't even bother drafting one of these trolls.
take the guy who gets cut. It is clear Jax does not know how to evaluate wr talent.
You are a smart man my friend. OC - no NFL experience. WR coach - no NFL experience. Mike Tice as assistant HC/offense. No need to go any further.

I'm trying to figure out why Northcutt is all of a sudden starting material. Once he starts his usual dropping of passes, he will be back to being a slot WR at best.

I never said matt jones has bad hands.....a writer for pro football weekly did :blackdot:

had to laugh when i first read Jones had bad hands-

Del Rio is an elementary school motivator and maybe that's what Jones needs. Northcutt beating him out is a joke.

I think Jax has the same problem that the Falcons used to have- bad coaching at the wide receiver/ scheme position.

I'm really liking Wilford as a value play here.

From what I read in this thread, Wilford pretty much the #1 WR. And he's starting alongside Northcutt, who I doubt is a serious threat to have a big season.

Wilford is a big WR with upside who has a history of good YPC and catching TDs.

Wilford's ADP is WR80. He can basically be had for nothing. He's going well below Matt Jones who isn't starting as of now and Reggie Williams who might be cut.

I've got Wilford down for 52-780-6 which I think is pretty reasonable, and there's upside there to do more.

Watching Northcutt the other night was enough to convince me to take him as my 5th (start 3) WR in the 12th round of a 12 team redraft last night. WR's are a funny breed. A guy like Peerless Price can switch teams and become overnight trash. An average player like S Moss can go to a team and have a breakout year. I figure Northcutt to be worth a late flyer.

Agree completely, 800/6 is right where I have him, and 116 FP puts him in the WR30-35 neighborhood or WR3 in 12 and 14 team leagues. He was just sitting on the WW in most of my leagues, so I've picked him up in 5 leagues. Pretty solid cheap bench strength even if he misses those projections as long as he's reasonably close. Why so many people (including fantasy sites) remain confused as to Wilford starting, with rankings still showing guys like Reggie Williams ahead of him, is beyond me. I guess people just refuse to let go of their outdated mental depth chart until the bullets are flying for real, and then it's too late because guys like you and me have already scooped up this bargain.

I've been arguing the job was his for three weeks now, and took him in MBSL2 as the 1st Jags receiver off the board (WR53). I think he's a lock to beat that, and if Leftwich stays healthy that he'll do something along the lines of 60/925/6.

Jacksonville has tended to rotate 3 guys, so I don't know that 1 is that different from 3. Matt Jones is probably going to be one of the the three because he is a legitimate big play threat, was the leading receiver last year and Byron wants him out there. Matt Jones' problems are route-running, adjusting to the ball if it isn't right on him and being extremely shy about contact. He also has a horrible reputation when it comes to work ethic. He can make safeties look slow and stupid sometimes though.

I don't really see ever rostering Northcutt unless you have high-risk guys in front of him and want a reliable guy to start if your other guys all bust. He just has a very low ceiling.

Jacksonville is #1 on my list of decent teams that I think will implode this season. I want nothing to do with their passing game at all.
