Jai Lewis at LT (1 Viewer)

He's an obvious developmental guy, so doubt they are losing faith already. He'll get cut, signed to the practice squad, spend next year in Europe, then be re-evaluated next year.

Not sure I agree with them playing him at T and not DE or TE but according to this article below he's not doing so well.

Not so sure if they're showing patience or already losing faith that he'll pan out
Now he's a left tackle because at 297 pounds and growing, he's better suited for blocking than he is running patterns.

"I think I have the intelligence (to play the position)," said Lewis. "Coaches told me I have the feet and good things, and I think I have the strength to compete with anybody. I just need to learn to pick up the plays and techniques that I haven't used in over five years.

"But I think I have the ability. The only time I got frustrated is when they ask about the plays I don't know the answers to. I'm not used to not knowing the answers to plays in basketball."

Seems like a better place for him than TE and DE imo.

When you watch him play basketball he was never the atheletic PF that has been converted to TE. Gates and Gonzo were the quicker PF who used quickness and leaping ability.

Lewis was not an explosive player on the basketball court that Gates and Gonzo were. He is however very mobile and fluid on the court, which translates better as LT.

If he made his mark as a TE it would've been as a blocking TE, IMO... never saw the explosiveness that Gonzo or Gates have.

I agree with your assessment of Gates as a basketball player. He was very quick and played facing the basket. He also had a very good crossover dribble move and a nice jumpshot 9as all lefties do). I went to Cal at the same time as Tony G and he wasn't nearly that kind of player. In fact, he didn't have much skill at all on the basketball court other than being 6'6" 245, athletic, and a good rebounder. I still rememeber a game against Alabama with the scored tied at the end of regulation when he bricked two free throws that would have won the game. When Gonzalez was at Cal, the stars on the basketball court were Jason Kidd, Lamond Murray, Brian Hendrik, and Al Grigsby. But Gonzalez was very good on the football field of course. I think he just played basketball because he liked the sport.
