PORT ARTHUR — Dr. James Andrews, who is pretty much the go-to surgeon for knee and shoulder work on sports stars, performed surgery on Memorial ex Jamaal Charles’ left knee Thursday in Pensacola, Fla. Early word is that the knee wasn’t damaged as badly as first believed, and that with proper rehab Charles should be full speed well before the 2012 NFL season kicks off. Jamaal will be spending the next two weeks in Pensacola, then go to Kansas City to do his heavy rehabbing at the Kansas City Chiefs facilities. Andrews, incidentally, has reportedly done over 40,000 knee, elbow and shoulder surgeries on a clientele that includes the likes of Drew Brees, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Roger Clemens, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, Jack Nicklaus and Charles Barkley .

I imagine there are often days where he does 5-10 'minor' surgeries. Though I have no idea how many surgeries a good surgeon does on average. But I imagine if anyone is doing that many it's him. My old neighbor went to him for shoulder surgery.

As a dynasty owner this is good news. Buy low? I can only imagine the wait was for opinions and possible reduction in swelling?

why did they wait so long to do the surgery? This happened week 2?

If he had any MCL damage or a lot of swelling, they will wait 4-6 weeks for the MCL to heal on its and for the swelling to go down.

He's been a surgeon for 40 years. I'm actually surprised the number isn't higher. A busy sports med surgeon bounces from room to room and can easily have 8-10 surgeries done in a single day.
