To me this would be just fine. I am not a Raiders fan or anything but having the top pick these days is way more of a curse than a blessing. Think about it. You are forced to devote a significant amount of cap room not to mention real monetary resources to a player who probably left college a year too soon and might not ever produce to near the level his salary demands. If I'm Al Davis I don't guarantee crap. If Russell wants to re-enter the draft then let him. He won't go number one overall again. The old man in the jumpsuit still might have a trick left. This would be the ultimate Al Davis shark move in terms of his former conflicts with the league as he would be thumbing his nose at the rookie payscale status quo and the league in general. I would applaud it. The situation is out of control and something must be done. Does anyone think that the Texans or Lions weren't hurt at least partially by the Carr/ Harrington cap numbers. San Diego could have kept Brees with a reasonable number for Rivers. Eli would probably be gone by now. Players like Leaf and Akili Smith wouldn't hurt your team for more than a year. The Titans could surround VY sooner than later. I would mention Vick but he was on his second deal currently and I'm so tired of hearing all that BS surrounding him. I know people were high on this guy as a raw talent, but I never felt he was worthy of the pick.....and am from the Quinn will be a better NFL quarteback club myself.I think he is trying to cash in on his bowl win at LSU knowing he will never amount to much of a star in the big-time!

I attack Al Davis every chance I get. But it seems like Russell is getting some bad advice here. Russell has almost no leverage here. I am guessing that Oakland has a very large amount of money on the table right now. But why should they bend over for Russell when they have two QBs on the roster in Culpepper and McCown that can start? Russell could trip in his home and tear his ACL and get absolutely nothing.

The Raiders do a lot of things wrong. But Russell is not making a smart decision.

I took Russell in our rookie draft (four round draft) I got him in the 3rd round . now i have to choose between him and E Manning . I all ready have Bulger and McNabb I think i will pick him up and store him until next year 24 man team

Not since Bo but Elway punked out and refused to play for the Colts. At least with Bo he told the Bucs he would never play for them prior to the draft. Actually, Elway warned the Colts and Eli warned the Chargers. Of course Elway and Bo both had baseball as leverage......

In the past it seems that the player has been traded. I can't recall a player going back into the draft(at least not a first rounder).

Uh, even if the guy signed right away, I doubt the fans would've seen him do anything more than hold a clip board this year...Look at it this way. If Culpepper is indeed healthy this hold out is the reason he's there and the Raiders are now more likely to win games than they would've with Russell. Russell holding out probably made the team better. See Rivers his rookie year and what Brees made of that opportunity....

Expect Culpepper, McCown or Walter to be traded or released next week depending on who plays better in this week's preseason game. I think the competition is actually that close.

I think this is a good move for both Oak and Russell. I tend to agree that Quinn was the more ready to start this year but the potential of Russell is attractive for the long haul. With the long holdout there is less emphasis putting him to early. The addition of Culpepper (if he is totally recovered and I haven't seen anything yet to indicate otherwise) gives you a QB that could go the entire year unlike McCown who was originally anticipated as a stop gap for part of the season until JaMarcus took over.

Latest report is that either Culpepper or McCown will be the starter. Which is not really news; anyone who saw Walter play could have told you that.There is zero chance that Russell starts on September 9, even if he signs today. He could get worked into the lineup sometime this year, but I have a feeling the team is leaning away from that. They have a new coach who gets a year-long honeymoon (even if he goes 3-13 it's an improvement), so they can afford to wait a year on bringing Russell along.

There's actually a decent chance he falls out of the top ten and that would cause even more lost $$$. He'll take his $31 MM this week and report. Hopefully, the team won't hold it against the rookie for skipping camp. He definitely blew his shot to start right away, but that's probably a good thing while Kiff repairs the offense.

JR wouldn't have fired his agent if he was close to accepting what Al was offering. His first agent has alredy told him that not starting this year is a good thing. If he stays top 10 next year, he'll probably make more money than #1 this year.

Okoye (10th this year) got a $17.6M deal with $12.785 guaranteed, which is similar to what Leinart got at #10 the year before.

Anyone who thinks he is not going to lose BIG money if he re-enters is kidding themselves or hasn't looked at the numbers.
