James Jones (1 Viewer)

I really can't get a peg on James Jones. It seems like every time he starts to become the clear cut guy to own after Jennings... he regresses. If I could sit down and have a serious talk with any player in the NFL it would be James Jones.

I would say, "Look man, you are on the verge of being a special receiver. You play for one of the most prolific up-and-coming offenses in the NFL and you are squandering an opportunity of a lifetime. Get your head on straight and get on the same page with Rodgers. And do whatever it takes to improve your hands. You have all of the measurables and most of the intangibles. Its now or never."

Right now it appears that Jordy has the so called #2 role. In other words, he was on the field with Jennings in most of the two receiver sets and he moved to the slot in 3WR sets. Most of you know that Jordy and Jones have sort of flip flopped again and again on the depth chart. But with Finley out and Driver finally starting to show his age, it is time for one of those guys to step up to the plate. I feel like every fantasy football owner and the coaching staff want Jones to take it - but he keeps shooting himself in the foot. At some point very soon, his opportunity will fizzle out and he will forever be that situational WR3 type like Devery Henderson.

Feel free to add your thoughts on this mid-season competition. It's driving me nuts now that BYE weeks and injuries are forcing me to consider using one of them in the upcoming weeks.

I think its fluid.

If Jones is making the plays like he did against Minnesota...he will be there.

If he is dropping passes like he did yesterday and Jordy is making big 3rd down catches...Jones will be out.

I don't think Driver is showing age. He got hit on the quad a couple weeks ago and has aggravated that injury. I don't think its age.

Jones is talented but he's always struggled with focus and consistency. I think yesterday's disaster was more about him having to play outside with Driver out and not matching up well with the Jets' CBs. If Driver had stayed in the game and Jones remained in the slot I think he would've been the beneficiary of the production Nelson received.

Not every team in the league has the CBs the Jets do, though. The Cowboys certainly don't. So if Driver sits Sunday night as expected, I think Jones makes for a fine sleeper pick.

hes just really not that talented. he has good size, and he will make a nice catch now and again, but he is what he is and thats a wr3. anyone that tries telling you hes the guy to replace driver, or hes going to be a stud in that offense yada yada yada needs to take another look. he was a reach draft pick in the 3rd round when he came out, and i havent seen anything since to make me think otherwise. ive never understood all the hype around this guy

I think the word ---> tease <--- explains it very well.

He had a pass yesterday that would've gone for at least 40 and maybe a TD. Hit him right in the hands, stride for stride. He dropped it.

To take the next step he has to make those plays.

How much of a reach was he really?

We started seeing more of Brett Swain this week. I wouldn't be surprised if he passed Jones on the depth chart in the very near future. The only thing Jones has proven since his fine rookie season is that he's maddeningly inconsistent.

Talented player with the penchant for doing something stupid. Also, Rodgers spreads the ball around and doesn't seem to differentiate between Jordy Nelson and James Jones (both are basically equivalent to him)

id be very surprised to see that happen. swain has been primarily a special teams player in his 3 years here, and got his first NFL catch this week. not saying its not possible, but i definitely wouldnt count on seeing swain catching too many passes

I'd be stunned. Jones is easily more talented than both Swain and Nelson. The problem is he often lacks focus. But in terms of pure talent he's right behind Jennings and Driver on the team. At some point, though, he needs to put that talent all together or the Packers will have to look elsewhere for Driver's replacement. I do not believe Nelson is starter's material and I don't believe Swain is either.

Jones hasn't been consistently good since Favre left. It has to drive the coaches crazy. His hands are inconsistent, so is his effort and focus. Packers management can't possibly view him as Drivers' replacement anymore. I think they know Nelson is a better #3/4 guy going forward too. If I'm Packers management, I'm taking a long look at Swain to see if he can be a reliable #3 going forward.

Thanks for the replies. Jones is obviously talented in that he can get open on just about anyone, and he is pretty wicked-hard to tackle after the catch. The problem as I see it is that his hands suck, and he misses reads with frequency. Those are drive killers and are keeping him from getting more play time and targets.

Jordy Nelson is a safe play for the coaches but he certainly lacks the big play ability that you get with Jones in the game.

As for Drivers age - no one can say with certainty why he had two knee surgeries and now is dealing with a nagging thigh injury in the past 10 months, but as a fellow 34 yr old who works out and stays in shape with the same intensity I have all my life, I certainly get injured easier now than I ever have before. Just like Derrick Mason, Marvin Harrison, Isaac Bruce, Tory Holt, etc... it starts with nagging injuries. In between bouts of injuries and playing less than 100% they still show some flashes of their former self, but they quickly become less and less frequent and then cease alltogether. Then less than a half a year later they are released and its all over. Maybe it wont be this year... or even next, but its certainly coming for Driver. Randy Moss was the #2 fantasy WR last year and now he's about to be released and expected by a lot of experts to pass through waivers. That's a pretty quick fall off.

TO doesn't count since he's not human.

Brett Swain? Seriously?

Sorry, Jones is a better WR than him at this point Swain has never shown them anything to be more than the #5 guy kept around to be a special teamer.

Jones has shown flashes of the talent...and yes, he has been inconsistent...but a solid #3 with upside.
