Jammer Signs 5 Year Contract ExtensionTuesday, Aug 08, 2006Cornerback Quentin Jammer has agreed to a new five-year contract extension that will run through the 2012 season, the team announced today. His current contract was scheduled to expire following the 2007 season.“Quentin is a major part of our defense,” said General Manager A.J. Smith. “He gets better every year. It’s exciting to know he will continue to be a Charger. He’s a true pro. He works year-round and has a great work ethic. He’s tough and physical. He’s a terrific run supporter and cover guy. The best is yet to come for Jam.”Jammer (6-0, 204lbs.) has started every game for the Chargers since 2003. Last season, the former Texas Longhorn set career highs with 72 tackles and 19 passes defensed. He was the team’s third-leading tackler in 2005.“I’m grateful that Dean Spanos, A.J. Smith and Ed McGuire saw me as an integral part of this team and wanted to keep me here,” Jammer said. “It’s a huge relief. Ever since the Chargers drafted me, I’ve said that I want to play my whole career in San Diego. This contract will go a long way toward that, and I’m thankful.”Quentin and his wife, Alicia, had their first child in March, a son named Kaden Matthew.

Any idea on the contract details?

They seem to have a ton of cap space but Jammer has been a bit of a disappointment to me to be honest. I thought Florence was supposed to be the player impressing everyone at camp? Does this development mean his future with the team is in doubt since Cromartie is likely to be a starter no later than next season?

Another "?" on the defensive front; How has Dobbins looked? Rarely see a mention of him despite the fact Edwards hasn't been playing and Wilhelm has been running with the first team. I would have thought that would have freed up time for Dobbins to get on the field and make some sort of impression either good or bad.

Florence needed to come to camp and impress folks. Cromartie has the measurables and if he translates them to the NFL game, he could the best corner on the team. Be nice to have Florence as a nickel. Haven't heard much about Dobbins yet.Kevin Acee wrote an article in the Union-Trib this week about Cooper and Wilhelm possibly taking over this season. That may not be far off long term (although I think Dobbins will compete with Wilhelm) but as an outsider it just looks to me like the media is taking every chance it gets to editorialize and tweak AJ Smith and Donnie Edwards into continuing their on-the-record soap opera.

Meh, also as an outsider I'm of the opinion it's a tempest-in-a-tea-cup and will all blow over if AJ just stops commenting on it.......... as opposed to commenting on it and then telling the media he's tired of commenting on it and won't again... until he does again. Nobody is going to give SD what Edwards is worth on the field and it's in Edwards best interest to play at his highest level for his next contract. I just think he and Godfrey are gone next season unless they win the SB and find that highly unlikely. The depth at the ILB does concern me. I'm less than sold on either Cooper or Wilhelm despite reading a few good blurbs about Wilhelm. Guess I was just hoping Dobbins would make a contribution his rookie season.

Godfrey is nearly certain to retire and it'll take an event of biblical proportion for Edwards to return next year. There will be two new ILBs in 2007. Cooper was tendered highly, has the respect of the current coaching staff, and filled in more than admirably for Godfrey on a couple of occasions last season. Wilhelm was tendered at a very low number this offseason and seems to be a depth/special teams guy. Acee's article suggested that Cooper would be the RILB and Wilhelm the LILB if the scenario were to be played out. I think Cooper is probably the best option there and ought to be the LILB playmaker with Dobbins and Wilhelm competing for the other ILB spot.

Thanks for the info Jene.

Strange that you really don't hear that much positive buzz about Cooper who as you said was tendered higher. MT has mentioned more than once he wouldn't be surprised if Wilhelm split time with Edwards even if Edwards is healthy this season..... which seems like a pretty strong statement to me. Edwards is still among the top half of starting LB's in the NFL while Matt Wilhelm is Matt Wilhelm. I just don't have much confidence in Wilhelm as an every down LB next year.

Of course a lot of this could go out the window if there is a major shake-up in the coaching staff next year. I'd guage that probability at about 50-50 given all the talk about how talented this SD squad is. I think anything less than at least one playoff victory will result in major changes in the coaching staff. It's cetainly possible, but the team could easily miss the playoffs again if Rivers misses any extended time with an injury which is also entirely possible when you are splitting time at OT between a gimp and a rookie. I'm not sold SD is as close to a SB contender as most despite having high expectations for Rivers play.
