Jason Babin released by Eagles (1 Viewer)

What's the deal here? The guy is coming off a recent Pro Bowl season and doesn't seem like he's the problem with the defense. If anything, Asomugha and DRC should be ashamed of their effort and play moreso than Babin.

So is this about the salary cap? What does Philly gain by releasing him? What teams might look to pick him up? He looks like a guy that could make an immediate impact for a fringe team or to shore up an already solid defense.

He's kind of a one-dimensional player who doesn't defend the run well. Not sure why he's been made to be the scapegoat there, but they seemed to be cutting his playing time in recent weeks.

He was on Sirius with Tim and Pat a little while ago.

He said he has great respect for Andy Reid, and he suspects that Reid may have done this as a favor to him. A playoff-bound team employing a 4-3 defense and needing an improved pass rush is sure to be in contact with his agent in short order. Also, the statement released by Philly about wanting to get a look at some of the younger guys is the truth.

Babin had no hard feelings whatsoever.

Not a salary cap move - Eagles don't gain any money even if he is claimed.

Young players (Curry, Graham) need reps. He makes too much to be kept in 2013.

Packers, Ravens, Pats(unlikely), Falcons and maybe Texans.

Price tag will likely be the determining factor to where he lands, if anywhere, most playoff teams this year are not struggling in the front.

Statement by the Eagles:

“We appreciate everything that Jason has given this team over the last couple of years,” said Andy Reid in a statement. “We wish him all the best as he continues his career. By releasing him today, this gives us an opportunity to give more playing time to some younger guys in the defensive line rotation.”

The housecleaning has begun.

Babin is also a #####. His whole career is based off of the wide 9. These past 2 years, every quote you've heard from him is about him getting his sacks. Very selfish guy that can't handle criticism. This year he's done nothing but whine to the media and about the fans riding him for not living up to his contract. I don't see this as a scapegoat. More just a parting of ways. He can go play for a contender and the Eagles can play young guys. Eagles can put all his bonus money that would have been spread out over the next 3 years into this year which they still have $21 mil in cap space. So come next season, he's completely off the books.

Can't stop the run

Only viable in the wide 9 formation

Cancer in the locker room

Don't believe a word he says as his teammates didn't wan him around the younger players.

Yeah, he's probably not much more than situational/rotation pass rusher and I'd rather see Curry and Graham get more snaps.

Steven A. Smith and Skip Bayless mentioned this as a possibility this morning. Perhaps some CLC's (career limiting comments) were made in the locker room after the game last night? All just speculation.

Ravens would be a perfect fit for Babin. While Suggs' return has helped the pass rush some it could still use a boost; Babin could be just the tonic the Ravens need to counter the likes of Manning, Manning, and Dalton down the stretch. Depending of the price tag I like this idea.`

If you have to immediately spell out your acronyms, you should probably just not use them.

:goodposting: I might have mentioned the same thing earlier if I had not stopped reading at "Steven A. Smith and Skip Bayless mentioned...".

curry was more productive in his first start than graham has been all year. graham is entering bust territory...
Completely false. Graham has not been getting many reps until recently, but when he was getting them he was playing well and was cutting into the underachieving Babin's time. The line as a whole stinks right now, need to dump the wide9 and reevaluate next year, but Graham will be a part of it.

It's being reported he's visiting the Falcons, Saints and Broncos. (provided this is a legit source; Philly fans?)

Falcons and Broncos are going to the playoffs for sure, you can cross off the Saints right now.
You think only a playoff team would want him? He has a couple years left on his contract at a reasonable number, I could see a few non-playoff teams being interested.
4-3 playoff teams in dire need of a pass rushing specialist is the only fit I see, given the strong draft classes coming up as far as rushing the passer the younger and cheaper route is the better long term route to take.

Pats should grab him. They just had a DE suspended for 4 games and Chandler Jones has an ankle issue. BB hasn't shown a moments hesitation about low character guys if he can find a use for them, and I bet he can incorporate some wide 9 looks for his line.

I may be wrong but I thought I heard he had to go through the waiver process.....he just can't sign with anybody

does anybody know what the current waiver order is....?

the discussion centered around some teams (playoff) making a claim for him even if he doesn't really fit their system, to prevent him from ending up on a (playoff) team where he does maybe fit in the system....just cost one roster spot

Did Reid make the decision to cut Babin or did it come from Lurie or Roseman? Apparently Washburn was upset at his release and Andy didn't tell him in advance.

Decision not Reid's?

But a number of sources, close to the Eagles, revealed a possible reason, other than Babin’s considerable drop off to 5.5 sacks this season, after his 18 sacks led the Eagles and garnered an invitation to the Pro Bowl in 2011.

Essentially they said Babin was a “me guy,” and the decision to release him didn’t come from Eagles’ coach Andy Reid, but from “above” Reid.
