Jermaine Phillips at Saftey Value (1 Viewer)

Currently Yahoo has Jermaine Phillips listed as a Safety. In a league where you're required to start one DB (CB/S), would Jermaine Phillips have a higher value than many other highly rated DBs?

The St. Petersburg Times projects converted strong safety Jermaine Phillips to open training camp as the Bucs' starting weak-side linebacker.

That means he'd be ahead of speedy second-year man Geno Hayes. Phillips admitted in May that he had a "long, long way to go" in his position switch, so don't consider him a lock. If Phillips beats out Hayes and maintains DB eligibility in IDP leagues, however, he'll be a very intriguing fantasy pick.

I haven't seen any indication that Phillips wouldn't start camp with the first team at WLB. Most of the OTA buzz was that Phillips was holding up well enough and that none of the OLB prospects had been bright spots this spring.

It's still unclear whether any of the Tampa OLBs will have any fantasy value -- both jobs and the nickel role are still in play -- but it's hard not to like Phillips' potential if you can roster him as a safety this season. Worst case scenario (starts at WLB but plays on base downs only) is probably the third most likely scenario right now with Angelo Crowell injured. There's a very good chance that he'll either be an every-down WLB or back in a solid safety role. There's a strong argument, especially in this group, that Phillips is a top ten DB in either of those roles.

Then he could be a huge value. Top 5 is still hard to imagine even if he stays a safety.

What have TB OLB's done in the past. Brooks was an exceptional talent and if not for all the big plays he had, I dont believe he was a tackle machine only breaking 100 individual tackles in 2004. With Ruud starting though the last 2 years, his numbers have gone down. I think the S is the better player to have and that looks like Sabby

In terms of relative value, the SS is definitely the better value in this scheme. The every-down OLB could push for marginal LB3 value (Dexter Coakley and Na'il Diggs have had a little value recently in similar situations, but it's not a big tackle-producing role. The SS isn't necessarily a stud-in-waiting either, but should get enough in-the-box snaps to have a shot to finish in the top 30.

Are this week's projections correct for him? He is still listed as LB and his projections seem low. Isn't he playing saefty this week?

"Jermaine Phillips will return to safety from linebacker to form a three-man rotation with Sabby Piscatelli and Will Allen until Jackson returns."LINK

Truth no one knows whats going on w/ Jackson returns. I read blip the Phillips will be playing FS during these next 4 games.

LB Geno Hayes will start at weak-side linebacker, the spot manned for 14 seasons by LB Derrick Brooks.
