Jets Defense still great without Revis Pace (1 Viewer)

Jets: Defense still great even without Calvin Pace, Darrelle RevisFLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — Bryan Thomas (FSY) had a get-well message for Calvin Pace (FSY), his injured teammate."Calvin is selfish!" the New York Jets linebacker shouted with a smile. "Write that down!"Pace will be sidelined a few weeks with a broken right foot, something Thomas thinks is downright inconsiderate. All jokes aside, some might consider not having their top pass rusher in Pace or shutdown cornerback in Darrelle Revis (FSY) a dire situation. Not the Jets."We'll get it done," coach Rex Ryan said Monday. "This is what we do. We're a team defense. That's why I know our defense will play great. There's not a question in my mind that we'll play great. We play great team defense."Pace, a starting outside linebacker, was scheduled to have surgery in North Carolina on Monday night to repair a broken bone in the foot. He and the team said they would know more about how long he'll be sidelined after the procedure, but he'll miss at least the opener against Baltimore on Sept. 13.That means Thomas, Jason Taylor and Vernon Gholston (FSY) will replace Pace, who led the team with eight sacks last season despite being suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances."We have guys that are going to run around and I know Rex is going to pick the best roster to make this thing happen," Thomas said. "When one guy goes down, the next guy just has to step up and keep the ball rolling. You can't say, 'OK, we're going to put the season on pause,' because one guy goes out."But the Jets might also be without Revis, locked in a bitter contract dispute that has no end in sight. Revis, recognized by many as the league's top player at his position, wants to be paid as such. His holdout reached its 30th day Monday, and it's a real possibility Antonio Cromartie (FSY) and rookie Kyle Wilson (FSY) will be the starting cornerbacks against the Ravens. Unless, of course, the sides reach an agreement soon."Obviously, you're talking about two great players and overall, in your mindset, you'll miss them, but it's about all of us going out there and making something happen," Gholston said. "The way we're set up, it's not just one guy. That being said, everybody else has to step up and keep the defense being No. 1."Ryan's aggressive defense is designed to throw offenses off with its unpredictability as players line up at different spots throughout games."Just in case something like this happens, you already know both positions, the strong and the weakside outside linebacker positions," Thomas said. "Calvin going down, it's a big void on the defense, but you still have somebody who can step up and fill that role."Just as the Jets had last season, when they opened without Pace and the suspended Shaun Ellis (FSY). New York also lost defensive tackle Kris Jenkins (FSY) later in the year and still finished with the top overall defense."We can get it done," Ryan said. "We've proved it all through the years. That's all I know is great defenses. That's what we stand for. It's not about one guy or two guys. Every team is going to go through one or two guys you're going to miss."Thomas will likely assume a lot of the man-to-man coverage duties Pace was responsible for. Meanwhile, Gholston will flip between defensive end and outside linebacker, as he did last season. But Taylor, the NFL's active sacks leader, will be on the field a lot more than originally expected."I wasn't walking around telling everybody I was a situation guy," Taylor said. "I want to play. ... It's my job to step up and help. Do I think I can do it? Yeah, that's what I do."Taylor, once one of the Jets' most despised opponents while with Miami, can quickly endear himself to the fans and his new teammates with a few sacks."People can write down whatever they want," Taylor said. "I've always kind of had that chip on my shoulder throughout my career. People have always said I couldn't do things. ... It's dependent on me now to go out and help this team any way I can."Without Pace and Revis, the Jets can certainly use as much help as they can get. Just don't think for a minute that they're panicking."It's easier with those players around, but we have confidence in the guys we have here, myself included," Gholston said. "It's all about the guys we have here and believing in the system."Copyright 2010 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Assuming this article is accurate and NYJ really don't miss a beat w/o Revis. What does that do to his value if anything? If a guy who was supposed to be all world at his position is replaced so smoothly that can't really be good for his leverage.

I disagree with that article completely, IMO every great defense either has a great pass rush who can get the qb and or a shut down secondary. Rex will be able to apply pressure, but who do they have that will actually get to the qb.

Peyton proved last year you can get all the pressure you want if you don't actually hit the qb it won't matter. Their secondary is average at best w/o Revis .

What made the Jets great was Revis could lock down one wr on one side of the field and the Jets could bracket the other wrs and te.That is what allowed the Jets to create pressure.

I don't think many people realize how important that is.

not a chance. Can it still be a good defense? sure. But nowhere remotely near what it can be at full strength with Revis and Pace.

And why shouldn't we believe Rex Ryan? Be only boasts about anything and everything.

He's delusional if he REALLY believes what he 's saying. Having a guy like Revis allows a defense to do a LOT more with their schemes. When you always have an extra safety, nickel corner, or LBer free you can blitz from a lot more areas, defend the run better, occupy more zones, etc.

If Revis continues to hold out and Ryan tries to do the same stuff he did with Revis in there, I think they're going to get lit up. Or are we really supposed to believe that Vernon Gholston and and 400 year old Jason Taylor are going to insure that they're an elite defense?

Dont you think its Amazing and Inconceivable that they have not made a real attempt to make this man happy???? Nearly every football expert agrees that Revis is the best in the game right?

The guy is asking for an obscene amount of money. If you had the worlds greatest gardener and he demanded 100k to trim your hedges, what would you say to him?

Just to play along:"I will still have one of the better yards in the neighborhood without paying you way more than the other yardmen" Me"When I take your nice yard to the best yard, people overlook the fact that your house (offense) is pretty average" Gardener

It just seems that every year there is a concensus #1 D that D tanks. Without fail. The Ravens have maybe been the exception but they are never the same without Ed Reed. As those that drafted the Steelers overall last year. Troy P went down and they became mediocre at best. I don't consider them elite without Revis.

I think the Revis holdout goes into the season and plays out 1 of 2 ways:

1) They get off to a slow start 0-2, 1-2 and Revis' side holds the cards. You want to risk the hole getting any deeper? Sign me.

2) They get off to a good start 2-0, 2-1 and the Jets side holds the cards. You want to miss out on the possibility of something special? Take our offer.

They will not be great this year...also, having injuries this early is always a bad sign, you know a few more will go down at some point in the year. Anyone who wastes a pick on them is going to disappointed starting in week one when the Ravens lay 20 + points on them.

There is a good chance NYJ open up the year 1-2 or 0-3 even if Revis had been playing. They start the season with games vs. Balt and NE at home, then head down to Mia in week 3. Not an easy opening schedule. Assuming Mia is as good this year as people think. More importantly though NYJ have all 3 of their division opponents scheduled in the 1st 4 weeks as they then go to Buf in week 4. Now most would expect them to beat Buf either way. However if the Revis impact is great enough the Jets could find themselves in a 3 game hole within the division. Not good. If this thing goes on for 4 more weeks it could get ugly for NYJ this year.

If you know that, then you must know who it will be?

Great? They weren't great last year. Sure, they had the #1 ranking, but fell short of being great.

Without Revis, they won't be the #1 D again, but top five is still realistic, and top ten is a near lock. Foxworth and Reed will miss week 1, but no one thinks that hurts the Raven's D as well? The Jets started last year without Pace and Ellis. Then they lost Jenkins, and the sky was falling. They played well anyway.

Ryan isn't stupid. He knows Cromartie is no Revis. He will make some adjustments. That doesn't mean the defense is going to collapse. Recent "anonymous" comments reported from the Jets locker room imply to me at least, that this defense wants people to know that they are more than one player, no matter how good he is.

I think no Revis is less of a factor against the Ravens. Now, week 2, against NE, his absence takes on much more importance.

I mean Reavis is dope. Best in the game. And pace is good. But cromartie was added and he's great too, and Gholston/taylor combo is still pretty good as far as D's go. Revis is great, but the aggressive scheme they run makes the db's look better as the qbs don't have as much time and throw up mistakes. I still see this as a top D, with or without Revis. The same scheme is still in place. And the offense has a year more experince to turn it over less than last year. That said... PLEASE SIGN REVIS

I'd much rather have SF, GB, BALT, PHI, and PIT later in the draft. Let someone else overdraft for the Jets def. I think it's silly to draft one too early.

I agree that this defense needs a shutdown corner or a great pass rush and without Revis and Pace they lack both....

Revis and his agents have really been a #### sandwich to my football season....

But, Rex needs to say what he needs to day to motivate his team.

The Jets defense will go all out, blitz and gamble.. From what I saw in the preseason, the better QB's and wr's in the league are going to burn them.

Cromartie was supposed to be a great #2 CB with rookie Kyle Wilson as a good, up and coming #3.

Now what you see is 3/4 of the secondary new and learning the system.

Rex will battle and is great with defensive game plans along with his staff..... So, I don't see a collapse but, Revis is a devastating blow.

Fantasy wise, I don't draft them at #1 without Revis.
