Jevon Kearse (1 Viewer)

He seemed off to a great start last season and then...big suprise...got injured.

Trent Cole posted great IDP numbers last season as his replacement. Not sure if Trent Cole is a real-deal NFL talent and might steal playing time or if he's just a fantasy-only flash in the pan.

Any homers, or other knowledgeable persons, know Kearse's return status and likelihood of regaining the majority of snaps?

My impression is that the philly D-line and LB's did not impress down the stretch so I would think that would weigh in Kearse's favor...if he returns healthy.

Welcome to the Forum.

Kearse is apparently on schedule to be fully healthy for training camp. He was already taking snaps at the Eagles' veteran mini-camps last month. His knee injury, while severe, didn't include an ACL tear and he would apparently have been able to return late last season according to his agent.

There are a number of issues with Kearse, though. First, he'll be 31 years old when the season starts, has had multiple injuries to his lower legs and hasn't finished a full season since 2000. That doesn't bode well for steady production this year. The Eagles also moved to a hockey-like rotation of defensive lines last year whereby one line played an entire series then sat the next series. The same four ends are rostered (plus Abiamiri) this year so that may very well continue.

IMO, all that points to Kearse having interesting upside in big play leagues but he'll carry such high risk that he's not worth more than a DL3 investment at best.

Cole is unquestionably an NFL talent. He is more than just a situational edge rusher. He wore down last season, though, after being asked to assume a near full time role when Kearse went down. The Eagles signed him to a pretty juicy extension last November, so the front office clearly feels he's a player.

I was a little higher on Cole than a few of the other staffers early this off-season, but he's pretty steadily climbed up our consensus ranking since then. For now, there isn't anyone who sees Kearse as a DL3 or better talent on those lists, which are based on a slightly tackle heavy scoring system.

Glad to be here and find others who crave that IDP fix!I was afraid of a DE rotation after watching Cole's box score impact. Just saw few Philly games last year to determine if Cole was for real.Kearse is my DL4 behind Grant, Suggs and Hall on my light,pre-auction roster. There are still some good FA DL's available at auction this year in our league. His cap number is cheap so I'll probably keep him on my roster "just in case".We give 1 pnt per solo and assist so i guess we are tackle heavy...but with most teams starting 4 LB's, it's the sacks and sack yardage that help DL's make a real difference in your game results.

Kearse should start, and play a lot. I think the hockey lines rotation was primarily about trying to keep the DT's fresh, and get more snaps for Cole. I don't think it will happen again this year, but it's early, and I've not been follwoign the local paers as closely as I often do.

Cole will likely replace Kearse eventually, but I think that's already obvious - similar type of player, and younger.

Note that the Eagels extended contract players don't always work out well, sometimes they are just guys they think will work out, they sign them, and they still end up not being worth the $ - Sam Rayburn, for example.

The one point per assist makes things interesting. You may want to check out the IDP 301 podcast on the Audible (posted in the FAQ and my sig). John Norton mentioned a few teams who get significantly different assist totals over the course of a season. May help you make some close matchup decisions during the week.Leagues are generally considered balanced at a ratio of 3-3.5x tackle points per sack. The one point per assist and points for sack yardage will skew that ratio some, but I'd guess the tipping point is still around 3.5.

Like usual, Jene is on top of things (and I'm an Eagles fan). The thing that has been holding Kearse back, well - two things. One is a complimentary end to rush from the other side. The other, and bigger deal, is the lack of good DTs in the middle. All the opposition would do is allow Kearse to stay outside, blocking inside-out, and attack the middle of the D-line with the ground game. The Eagles were unable to stop a lot of runs up the middle last year, which left the DE's with little tackle production. Howard and Cole did put up good sack numbers which boosted their overall value, but from an NFL defense perspective, the Eagles were weak up the middle and teams often attacked that soft underbelly. Now, looking forward - Kearse is 31 on opening day and he has a big price tag. This could be his last year in Philly if he gets hurt or if he's not "the freak" any more. With Cole and Howard doing well last year, they may not need a $7M DE - and keep in mind they just drafted another. Philly doesn't keep many guys over 30 years old. That could play into Kearse's hand, though, as he could be playing for a big payday for 2008 - either by Philly keeping him or by his moving to greener pastures.Look for the Eagles to maintain the hockey-line style and rotate their guys to keep everyone fresh and in the game. That helps out in the fourth quarter. If Howard and Cole (and now V. Abiamiri) do well, Kearse could be gone in less than 12 months.
