Jimmy Clausen or Cam Newton (1 Viewer)

Cam Newton 8/19 for 134 yards and a 66.6 passer rating against second stringers

Jimmy Clausen 4/7 for 69 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT for a 90.8 passer rating against first stringers.

They're going to give Newton tons of opportunities to win the job, but I think people are really overstating how well Cam looked and how 'poor' Jimmy Clausen looked.
Well that touchdown was a better catch then it was a throw. Just like the pick 6 it was thrown behind the receiver only this time Olsen was able to snag it. And Newton had several catchable balls dropped. So the ratings are misleading if you didn't actually see the game.
I saw the game, And I disagree. There were some dropped passes missed by the WR for both QB's, but I didn't see the TD pass as a product of the WR. And I didn't think any of Cam's passes were particularly note worthy. Not even the "frozen Rope" as the announcers called it. Cam get too much hype from all directions. A lot of Carolina fans and locals by into it.
He had to reach behind himself to catch the ball. That wasn't a well placed pass.

Yeah cause Merrill Hoge is some Delphic oracle. Probably wasn't his fault? It either was or wasn't and I guess I'll take Jimmy's word it was.
No matter whose fault it was, Jimmy isn't going to throw DeAngelo under the bus. Hoge knows football better than you or I. Either way, I don't think it matters. Even with the throw, Clausen had a decent game. The Jimmy haters want to discredit him as much as possible, but his game was as good/better than Newton's. But listening to most fans, Clausen was horrible and Newton was an all-star. But it was one preseason game and I'm not putting too much on it. My only point really has been that Clausen hasn't yet had a fair chance to prove/disprove his ability to play in this league. The failures of last year's team were only in very small part due to his play. So many other factors, top down. This is Newton's team. Has been since he was drafted.

You can try to parcel out blame but you can not say he hasn't had a chance to prove himself. He played in 12 full games last year, had 299 attempts and amassed a 58.4 QB rating for the year. Threw 9 picks to 3 TDs. He got his chance, he sucked mightily, and I think the coaches have seen enough:CAR - Cam Newton to start preseason game

Carolina Panthers Ron Rivera said QB Cam Newton will start the second preseason game Friday, Aug. 19.

The writing was on the wall pretty early last year that Clausen couldn't play at this level. I doubt they spend much more time verifying that.

The situation sucks all the way around for both Cam and Clausen. Being a young QB is hard enough, but having to do so as the #1 overall pick for a really crappy team or to be some sort of prodigy playing on an even worse team last year with the #1 overall pick standing behind you is a no win situation, pun intended. It would behoove Rivera to start Clausen for a few weeks at least and groom Cam. A year would be better, but any incompletion or pick is going to get the fan base in an uproar. Doesn't matter if Clausen has a 70% completion rating, they'll boo the other 30% and call for Cam. Cam will go in too early, IMO and suffer for it.

That being said, Cam may be a once in a generation guy and really grasp the offense and when he gets in trouble, use his legs to get out of it as he learns his craft and win some games ala Vick when he was young. I think the kid has tremendous talent, I just don't think he's that talented...

Troy Aikman, Rookie Year 11 starts. 11 losses. 9 TDs. 18 INTs. Bad Team. Rookie QB. Bad things happen

I probably should've put the that in italics. I think he's a tremendous talent, just not a once in a generation talent that hits the ground running (no pun intended) after a very brief TC and preseason schedule.
