Job Hopping (1 Viewer)

16 years this month. Despite SacramentoBob's feeling on it, I think for me, loyalty matters. I could have easily left, but when it come right down to it, I started here 16 yeras ago with zero experience and no degree. Everything I know, they taught me or sent me to classes to learn. I dont have a reason to look for another job.
Just curious though. If you were to get let go today, do you feel confident in getting another position of equal or greater pay? Also what type of work do you do?
I work in IT. Although I dont have a degree, I could probably get a higher paying job if I was fired, based on my experience.
Scarily, i see this happen and in many cases people end up having alot of trouble finding work after being one place for so long. Have you thought about at least floating your resume to jobs just to see your current worth or interest?
I have not. You think its harder for someone who has been at a company for ten years to find a job than it is for soemone who had 5 jobs in ten years? What would be the rational for that?

Well, sometimes if you are in the same role for 16 years your skillset is lacking compared with someone who has had exposure to many different technologies, environments and infrastructures. Plus, if you don't have recent or in demand certs and a degree it could put you at a disadvantage just getting your resume seen to have your experience be discussed. As you probably know IT changes quickly!

Not saying this is the case with you. However, it is the reason if i was in that situation(and i have been in the past) i would still keep my resume fresh and see what is out there and what type of jobs are interested in my skillset. If im not getting any responses, i might learn something(maybe a cert, maybe go learn something new like AWS or python....) new or work towards getting my skills to a point where they are in demand.

Not trying to come down on you or anything. Was just curious regarding your comfortableness.

Makes sense. I have not been in the same role, but simply the same company. Currently in my third role and seriously considering a totally different role that will open the next couple of weeks (facilities).

ahh ok. So you have been getting promotions and decent raises then. That makes sense. Good luck in the new role btw.

I'll have been with my current company for 3 years in October. First job out of school.

I've gotten the following raises in pay rate and 2 promos since I joined.

Starting -> 25% raise/promo -> 3% standard raise at end of year -> 22.5% raise/promo (Plus gained a 10% yearly bonus) so if I include my bonus level in the raise it was a (34% raise) -> 3% standard raise at end of year. My boss told me I'm in line for another promotion at end of year to a senior level position. Where I'll probably get another 10-15%.

Over my time here my salary has increased close to 88% from starting salary with no bonus to current salary with 10% bonus. I've thought about job hopping as I see stuff like this, but I see no reason why, unless the raises/promos go away.

The big factor in my 2nd promo was due to a job offer at another company that came across through linked in. I interviewed, got an offer and showed my boss. He gave me a raise/ new title and tacked on the bonus to beat the other offer. I have no set hours, can work from home whenever I want/need. I'm lucky in the fact that I'm the only one who does what I do at my company, so I get to interface with senior execs / vps on a constant basis. My biggest complaint is that I'm still doing the exact same thing I started doing almost 3 years ago. I'm literally learning nothing new, only difference now is I have people who report to me. But I'm essentially just the excel expert at my company and prepare tons of reports each day. I'm not sure how well that goes over on a resume, so it makes me wonder if pay raises are making my expectations too high if/when I go to leave.

My essential skills for this job are: Crunch numbers, prepare reports, and present them to senior execs in a readable format. Not sure that can continue to justify raises/ make another company wanna throw money at me, so the excitement of learning something new, "padding my resume" is always there with job hopping.

You guys hoping around, are you staying in the same city/area or moving? I just quit a 10 year job and am moving several states over. Huge PIA.

I have literally changed jobs that are across the street from each other. I have stayed in the same city

My wife is an ER Nurse. Tenet Healthcare just took over and froze all pay raises until they had a chance to analyze. You'd think they would have done that prior to the take over, but I digress. She was a non-benefit employee (my health ins.) and stood to lose 15% if she stayed so she took a travel job at a hospital I drive past everyday to work. She makes more money traveling and still works per diem at the old hospital making more than she did as staff. Seems to me that is just part of the culture in healthcare.

Side question.....

Would you take a 10% pay cut, with basic cola increase every year.

Drop from 3 weeks pto, plus 12 holidays

And go to 2 weeks vacation, 2 weeks sick and 10 holidays for lifetime employment?

My new job is in a large metro area, which is a first for me. So it will be interesting to see if I change jobs more frequently going forward.

It depends. 2 jobs ago I moved 800 miles to take a new higher paying job. Where I live now (greater NYC area), I can job hop pretty easily without moving.
