Job interview advice.....Drug screen negative Update on page 16 (1 Viewer)

I got emailed back from a hiring manager for what appears to be a large and reputable insurance company judging by the website.

25% more than I was making with bennies.

im surprised they emailed me back so quickly because I didn't think my resume had a shot. It's for an accounts manager. Im assuming it's a highly competitive position and I have less than a year of management experience and no college.

my assumption is they are looking for someone trainable. I'm meeting the hiring manager Tuesday at 1020 am. He must be interviewing a lot of people to set me up such an odd time.

Can I really have a shot with the sparse resume? Is it normal to consider someone with low experience for a 60k position?

is it normal for them to set up an interview through email with no phone call first?

would my best bet to be open and honest with the guy about my work experience and hope he sees that my work ethic and drive makes up for what I lack on paper?

anything I should know about life insurance before going in? I currently know absolutely nothing about it.

He also asked me to come in business professional attire. Does this mean I have to buy a suit or just a shirt and tie? I can't afford a suit right now.

any additional advice would be appreciated. Any insuranceguys in the house?

accounts manager. that involves management. isn't this what drove you to cheating the system despair last time? this time is different?

Cheating the system?

Blue collar staffing is a uniquely harsh industry and I had zero support from my company. I'm not seeing how it applies.

What are my options for an affordable suit?
the FBG fashion thread was just talking/linking cheap suits... no joke.

well- not sure if the suits were meant as a joke- but I'm not joking.. there are links to cheap suits in there right now.

Fwiw my wife, with no working experience outside the home was called in for a similar (sounds similar from what you wrote anyway) position, or so they said.  Turned out to be a sales pitch for an almost exclusively commission-sales job.  She, without having worked in over a decade, was easily the most put together person there.  She declined the "job".

Hopefully this isn't that.  If it's a decent job, be upfront and honest about your experience.  They will figure it out if you're not.  But emphasize your motivation.

Business appropriate, imo anyway means suit. Honestly if you can't afford it they may not want you.

One of my interviews, which job I declined, was as a "financial advisor" but really selling whole life was how they make most of their commission.  Couldn't do it, I won't work somewhere where I'm encouraged to push a specific product that might not be right for the client.

you need to wear a sport-coat and tie...minimum.

do your homework about this particular company. come up with a few questions about who they are and what they do.

be prepared to ask specific questions about your responsibilities in this position.

if your resume is weak, play up your positives in person (embellishment does not necessarily mean lying)

Do they carry decent stuff?

would it matter if it's obviously cheap? Is it the effort that counts?

ive never worn a suit in my life. I don't even know my size

I am eligible. I was laid off
prior to being laid off, you weren't.

like I said early... carry on. and good luck with the interview. genuinely hope you get it if you want it, and that the work is to your liking and doesn't cause undue stress.

I'm not planning on lying about anything but selling myself as someone who will work harder than anyone else.

whats a sport coat?

Account managers generally aren't "managers". The definition of the role varies by company (and I'm not sure about life insurance as that's not what I do)but they typically act as assistants to underwriters.

You can definitely train someone who didn't go to college to do that job but it requires a lot of team work and people skills (and patience with people who don't always know what they're doing and will make your job harder than it needs to be). So I'd think twice before you go all in on this one. Doesn't really seem to be in your wheelhouse.

And yes, find some way to wear a sports jacket. Borrow or rent one if you have to. I know there are charities that take donations of interview outfits for people that can't afford them

If I can't swing a suit would I be out of the running with shirt , slacks and tie?

If you're the best candidate, probably not. But you've already acknowledged that your resume is light. So now you're going to be the not clean cut looking guy with the light  resume who didn't bother to wear a jacket.

So yeah, you'll probably be out of the running.

I'll be clean cut

Seriously?

not lulu lemon but go with the frat boy look? I have chinos and light blue Lacoste shoes
ideally, you'd wear a suit & tie. but since that's not possible:

khakis/chinos

light blue oxford button down

dark blue blazer/sport coat

brown loafers

brown belt

tie (some kind of pattern w/ dark blue in it)

go to Marshall's or Ross and you can probably pick up the whole thing for under $150. or head over to Goodwill or the thrift shop and see what they've got.

I have a feeling you are walking into a situation similar to OZ's wife. If you thought Blue Collar staffing jobs were harsh, wait until you try selling insurance. I'd bet the position's salary is going to be mostly commission based. I can't see a company hiring for a $60K salaried sales position and putting such little effort into selecting candidates for interviews.

IMO these are usually high turnover positions, so they are just looking for warm bodies. They play the numbers game and hire a lot of people that are high energy, hard workers and hope some of them work out.

Would you recommend a white button down shirt?

i only have a light blue and I also have black slacks.

would black jacket, slacks, shoes, belt, tie with a baby blue button down underneath look strange?
