Job interview advice.....Drug screen negative Update on page 16 (1 Viewer)

I have a feeling you are walking into a situation similar to OZ's wife. If you thought Blue Collar staffing jobs were harsh, wait until you try selling insurance. I'd bet the position's salary is going to be mostly commission based. I can't see a company hiring for a $60K salaried sales position and putting such little effort into selecting candidates for interviews.

IMO these are usually high turnover positions, so they are just looking for warm bodies. They play the numbers game and hire a lot of people that are high energy, hard workers and hope some of them work out.

thats the ad. There is no mention of sales. Could it still be a ploy?

You got an interview go check it out. Just don't cash any cashiers checks and send money back to someone.
I'm worried about spending money on unnecessary additional clothing

should I just go in shirt and tie to see what it's about?

if it's not a ploy for a commission based job I can always explain why I don't have a suit. If that bothers them then it's not the kind of person I want to work for anyway.

this is what jumps out at me from that listing:

* Work well under pressure while remaining professional* Excellent listening and problem solving skills
* Answer incoming calls from customers
* Strong Customer Service skills
* Ability to work directly with the customer to resolve customer support issues

i could be wrong, but from that it sounds like you're gonna be manning a Customer Service Support line, and taking phone calls from hacked-off people.

Oh, i totally glossed over the fact that it was a Craigslist posting.

Agree with everyone who just said they're looking for warm bodies. Jacket won't be required.

And zero chance this is 60k base salary. ZERO

After being in staffing that should be a breeze for me.

im more worried about it being commission based. I do not want a mostly commission based position but customer service I could probably be great at.

is 60k a normal salary for something like that?

Um, having at least one suit for future interviews is not an unnecessary expense IMO unless you intend to be working in construction or something along those lines.

However, from your description I am almost certain this job is sales and 100% commission only and unless you just doing the interview for experience only, it will probably be a waste of your time.

It also says Compensation is $60K, that isn't necessarily all salary. They could pay you a base salary and then say with commissions they expect you to be earning $60K if you are doing the job well.
If the majority agree with you then I'm just getting a cheap white button down and tie to see what it's about.

I have no problem going back in to blue collar work. I'm just testing the waters here and if I can't make at least the same salary as my last position in an office setting I'm going to seek to go back in to truck driving

Not liking some of the stuff I'm reading here and if the nagative reviews are true it's not the place for me.

guess it was too good to be true and I had a funny feeling when they emailed me back so quickly. I thought I would be lucky to even find a job at my old salary.

probably better I invest clothing money in switching my DL to TX and getting a new medical card and look for a driving job. I could probably make the same money working less hours and not having to be bored in an office all day dealing with nitwits

I'm thinking the best way to utilize my limited management experience to get my foot in as a blue collar supervisor in some capacity......or go back in to staffing which is not always boring.

I already confirmed the appointment. Would it be a mistake now to email the guy with a few more questions?
Why not go through with the interview? It will be worth the practice.

Also, buy a sport coat or suit at the thrift store and pay a tailor to alter it. You should be able to get a well fitting navy or dark grey suit that will last you years for total cost under $100. You can dress it up or down with new shirts/pants/ties as you move along.

It depends on the investment. Money is too tight to waste at the moment.

it just doesn't sound like it's for me now that everyone has helped me read between the lines.

if they are just looking for bodies do you really think it will be valuable interview experience? I may just be walking in to a sales pitch.

I got emailed back from a hiring manager for what appears to be a large and reputable insurance company judging by the website.

25% more than I was making with bennies.

im surprised they emailed me back so quickly because I didn't think my resume had a shot. It's for an accounts manager. Im assuming it's a highly competitive position and I have less than a year of management experience and no college.

my assumption is they are looking for someone trainable. I'm meeting the hiring manager Tuesday at 1020 am. He must be interviewing a lot of people to set me up such an odd time.

Can I really have a shot with the sparse resume? Is it normal to consider someone with low experience for a 60k position?

is it normal for them to set up an interview through email with no phone call first?

would my best bet to be open and honest with the guy about my work experience and hope he sees that my work ethic and drive makes up for what I lack on paper?

anything I should know about life insurance before going in? I currently know absolutely nothing about it.

He also asked me to come in business professional attire. Does this mean I have to buy a suit or just a shirt and tie? I can't afford a suit right now.

any additional advice would be appreciated. Any insuranceguys in the house?
Are you referring to the work ethic and drive that saw you attempt to manipulate your way out of employment and on to unemployment after an exhausting year at your former position, a year that in your perception you equated to a lifetime of hard work experienced by others?  No, I would not mention that.  Lying is clearly your best shot.

It depends on the investment. Money is too tight to waste at the moment. Investing in your future is never a bad thing.

it just doesn't sound like it's for me now that everyone has helped me read between the lines. You should say "thank you"

if they are just looking for bodies do you really think it will be valuable interview experience? I may just be walking in to a sales pitch. It's still interviewing experience. Are you worried they will trick you into working there?

I wasn't manipulating anything. It was a sinking ship and had been for a while.

i never equated my experience in that way. You lack serious reading comprehension or you are just being a richard as usual

like others have said: go to the interview.

at the very worst you'll be able to learn something form the experience that you can apply later.

There are 3 thrift stores down the block from me. That's probably my best bet
Dress for success.

They say you should dress, at the interview, not for your position, but for the position of the person interviewing you.  If you suspect the Hiring Manager shops Goodwill then that is the play, otherwise, not so much.

Go to the interview naked, except for a pair of brand new Yeezy's. If it's a scam, well then, f them. If it's not a scam, they'll admire your moxie and offer you the $60k because you're your own man.

I just don't have $100 to spend on a Jacket.

i emailed the guy back asking if it's base or commission and I'm awaiting the response before deciding what to do. If there is a decent base salary I will probably check it out.

What's the FFA consensus on this?

Yep

But still go check it out.  Ask questions if they don't make it clear, but it sounds exactly like the one my wife went to.  You can make good money doing it but it's sure not the lifestyle I'd want.

Serious question. Are you able to pass the drug test that most companies will be administering?
I haven't smoked in almost 2 weeks. I should be ok.

i took a few cheek swabs from the office to be sure. I'll take one in a bit and let you know how it came out.

i got pretty bored of weed lately and if I get a decent corporate type job I can always switch back to coke and have a much lower chance of popping on a whiz quiz

Kind of risky behavior if you are trying to land a $60K+/ yr job, don't you think? Or considering going back to being behind the wheel of a large truck?

No offense, but these companies prey on people like you, and hope that you have some family/friends with some money who feel bad enough about your situation that they'll buy some crap from you.

Well the jokes on them. My family hasn't got 2 nickels

On a more positive note: it is a job.  I've known people that have taken those types of jobs and done okay.  It's not like the President keeps calling you to offer you a cabinet position at the moment.

Suit suggestion: A lot of people get buried in them, they don't really need them...  Just an idea.  Of course you may need to invest in a shovel and flashlight.  Bonus if you show up in a top hat for the interview.
