From ESPN:

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Joe Paterno, the longtime Penn State coach who won more games than anyone in major college football but was fired amid a child sex abuse scandal that scarred his reputation for winning with integrity, died Sunday. He was 85.

His family released a statement Sunday morning to announce his death: "His loss leaves a void in our lives that will never be filled."

"He died as he lived," the statement said. "He fought hard until the end, stayed positive, thought only of others and constantly reminded everyone of how blessed his life had been. His ambitions were far reaching, but he never believed he had to leave this Happy Valley to achieve them. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, his players and his community."

With how his great career ended and now his passing...it is a sad day for football fans. RIP Joe Paterno.

RIP Coach. One of the best ever. It's sad that his legacy will end up being tarnished because of this year but I hope as football fans people won't forget his successes.

It's fitting that everything came out about him before he passed away. He deserved to feel some of the heat for what he (didn't) do.

Regardless, RIP.

I agree, if he died before any of this news came out he would of died as a legend... now he died watching everything he spent his whole life building be tarnished, so fitting. Wish he could of lived during the trail and endured more.Penn St will honor him for now and milk as much money as they can, but once the dirt comes out during the trail and then the lawsuits start the new regine is going to push themselves away from the memory of JoePa as soon as possible.

Was he really one one of the best ever?He had a few good years, but Penn State has been a mid par team for the last decade.Sure, he has the record for wins - but look how many years he coached.Did they keep him cause he was an icon or a coaching guru?I think Joe Pa was good.He wasnt great.

Check out his winning % for PSU over the time he was there....top 5 in the country easily, despite one poor decade.Paterno deserved to be fired, and deserves criticism, but it's ridiculous that so many are willing to ignore 50 years of greatness, and all the good he did. The guy gave back HALF of his income to improve the University. He screwed up badly in the Sandusky incident, but he wasn't the rapist...that screwup doesn't, or at least shouldn't, come close to erasing all the good stuff.RIP JoePa...you'll be missed.
