Zumaya expected to miss half of '08 season after shoulder surgery

Tigers reliever hurt himself during California wildfires

November 1, 2007

Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya underwent surgery Wednesday on his throwing shoulder and will be out until at least the midpoint of the 2008 season, the team announced today in a news release.

The procedure, an AC joint reconstruction, took place at the Scripps Clinic in San Diego. The right-hander was injured moving personal items during the California wildfires, the team said.

Zumaya will rest his shoulder for the next six weeks before he will be able to begin an active rehabilitation program. He is expected to begin a strengthening program in three months, and it is anticipated he will begin a throwing program in four months.

Dave Dombrowski, the Tigers’ president and general manager, will answer questions about Zumaya in a conference call with reporters at 4 p.m. today.

Complete reconstructive surgery on his shoulder. Sounds bad.

Mid-2008 is the best case scenario.

He looks like he may be another Matt Anderson. He shows up out of nowhere his rookie year consistently hitting triple digits on the radar gun and then as fast as he appeared on the scene, he was out of baseball.

At least the timing of the injury allows the Tigers have time to either make a trade or acquire a free agent before the season starts. It will be interesting to see if Todd Jones increases his salary demands knowing the Tigers don't have Zumaya as an alternative at closer.

The box that fell on him to cause the separation (the worst kind of separation btw) was a box of World Series memorabilia. That series will haunt Tiger fans and apparently the team for a long time. :)

Fuentes is probably one of the best closers available, and the rockies will be entertaining offers for him. They might go after him.

Fuentes didn't look too hot after the All Star break and that's why he lost his job. Could be an optio though depending on cost. A lot of the best relievers available (Rivera, Cordero, Linebrink) are all Type A FAs which means the Tigers would lose their draft pick. Tigers have become a juggernaut on draft day so I'm not sure they'd be willing to do that. Kerry Wood is also an option (not my idea) :blackdot:

He also lost his job because he got hurt, but yes he struggled after the break. I don't think he is a type A, but he might be a type B.never mind he is a type A.

Fuentes had a few bad weeks while pitching hurt but then came back to dominate as a setup man. Hed be a red-hot commodity.

You must have not watched the playoffs. Don't blame you.

Yeah Fuentes sucked it up against the Red Sox, but he had some solid moments against Arizona (except for one game) and Phillies (except for one game). errrrI don't understand his type A ranking to be honest.

Any legs to the rumors circulating that it was caused by something other than moving boxes?
Yes, there has been some talk on that topic. From what I have heard Zoom is very immature.Plus many people in the Detroit area claim that Bird Fidrych first hurt his shoulder getting bounced out of a nightclub.Zoom and the Bird may have the same career length.Even if he does come back I highly doubt he will be thowing 102 again.
