Agree that it's a good deal for Atlanta.

But it's also interesting how the once top-drafted QBs Carr and Harrington are now mere backup fodder in the NFC South.

#$@! it. I was hoping Colts would make a play for him. If they got him at or near vet minimum that's a great move by ATL IMO. And nothing to lose since they have Mr Superstar at QB anyway ;)

I suppose that say more about the Falcons willingness to gamble on Vick's health than anything else.

I agree. If this was the 'master plan' to begin with then I am very impressed..... if it just kinda fell into their laps then I am less impressed but regardless they positioned the franchise for a brighter future in these moves.

I still think that Harrington will be a starter again in the NFL. If Vick struggles this season, I look for them to move him.

Good move for the Falcons!!!

this Schaub finesse is the best set of moves of any organization in the offseason. The Falcs made out like bandits.

Harrington is absolute garbage. Big downgrade for the Falcons at backup QB (which may or may not be a good thing, considering the upgrade they received for it).

What a lousy QB draft 2002 turned out to be, not one starter likely 5 years later.

This is a good move by the Falcons.

The Panthers and the Falcons have made excellent QB acquisitions for their teams in the last week or so. I hope this does not come back to haunt the Saints.

Harrington in no way should ever be considered "just as capable" as Schaub. That is an idiotic statement
should have said just as capable as vick....at least in throwing.one reason vick doesn't throw alot of interceptions....DB's have an even harder time catching his passes than receivers.

Damn!

How many QB's is that now for ATL? Is Petrino the next Gruden? They gotta have what...8 QB's on the roster now?

:shockleyowner:

Vick must be shaking in his boots.
Vick: 'Whew, no threat to my job for at least 1 more year'
Vicks "job" in "1 more year" will be running backs coach under Jim Mora Jr. at the U of Washington!!!
News flash, Vick isn't a running back. Thanks for bringing the meat.

It was a joke!
Oh I get it. You said he'd get a running backs job, because he has a poor completion percentage. I get it now. I see how you turned that around on him. I've never seen anyone do that before. A running back. Oh man that's good. You really burned him there. Implying he should switch positions due to poor play. I never saw that coming. I usually love that original, suble, intellicual humor. I'm not sure I missed your comedy gold.Oh wait. Because it was ######ed.

lighten up francis

Here is what gets me about a signing like this.

Harrington has NONE of Vicks ability, none. Vick is a running QB that creates what he can by moving around. Harrington is a drop back passer (forget for a moment he is awful).

Point being the two skill sets do not match up, so IF Vick were hurt the Falcons have to adjust their offense. Why not sign a guy with at least some of the ability that Vick displays and minimize the disruption to the offense if he went down?

This is the same reasoning I used for why Schaub should have been traded...

BTW-This would IMO be the perfect spot for Troy Smith to land.

Jeez, are you Vick's agent or his lover?I guess that depends on what name he gave you - Vick or Mexico.

Vick licks.

In the Falcons mind the "disruption" in the offense is less of a negative impact than getting a QB with less talent than Harrington (and yes I do know how that reads). For the most part, teams want the more talented players and assume that professionals paid alot of money can make reasonalbe adjustments when difference in style occur.

I wasn't clear. I think it is an excellent addition for a backup. He is a capable NFL starter, but not a great one. He performed decently in Miami last year. It is a good situation to have that as your backup was my point.

I thought the move by Carolina to pick up Carr was a good move because finally Carr did not have to live up to expectations and carry a team/franchise on his shoulders. Instead he could use the time to learn about the NFL game and what it takes to be a successful NFL QB.

Like Carolina's pickup of Carr, I think this is a great move by the Falcons. IF Petrino is a QB guru as he is made out to be, he can TEACH Harrington some basics. Harrington can sit back quietly behind Vick. He can learn the systm and maybe get rid of somoe bad habits. IF Vick is awful, ATL can trade him next year when his cap hit is not so bad. And, at that time, Petrino will have seen enough of Joey in practice to see if he will work out. And, he will have a veteran QB to start in case he takes a QB next year.

For the $$$, I think it is a good risk to take.

Worst case, you have an average backup in Harrington. He might not have been starter material in his two stops, but IMHO he is one of the top 64 QBs in the game.

I agree, but I have no idea why.
Harrington has tons of starting experiance and enough time to see that he is no Joe Montana. Schaub has been riding the bench and has tons of potential.... but really- doesnt everyone have tons of potential if they have not really played yet? For a back up QB Harrington is not bad. He has some talent and like I said tons of experiance. There are teams that have a lot worst as their #2.

 I don't think we need any qualification that Joey Harrington isn't a great NFL starting QB. I don't see what makes him a capable one, either, though.

Joey Harrington was once again awful in 2006. By one measure of passing value added, he hurt his team more than any other QB in the league last year. By the same measure of passing value added, Joey Harrington has hurt the teams he has played on more than any other QB in the NFL since the merger. He's had three seasons of absolute horrific QB play. For all QBs since 1960, Joey Harrington has two of the three worst seasons (measured by yards per pass attempt) of all time, minimum 400 attempts. He has never played on a team that has won more than six games in a year, despite playing for five years.

There's exactly one positive about Joey Harrington: he's played well enough in practice (and college) to earn playing time. When he's been actually on the field, though, he's been absolutely terrible. By any standard.

Don't forget about his subperb piano playing!!!

Bolded 1 - The Lions were a pitiful team. Harrington won 3, 5, 6 , 5 games for them respectively in 4 years. Without him, they won 3 games. I think they were other things wrong with the Lions then just Joey Harrington. The Dolphins were not a powerhouse last year either, especially with the craziness the last few weeks of the season with the whole Saban drama.Bolded 2 - Archie Manning never played on a team that won more than 8 games, and I think he was a quality NFL starter.

His career, especially given his draft position, has certainly been a disappointment thus far. It is difficult to determine what a change of scenery to Atlanta will do for him. However, if I were a Falcon fan, I would feel more comfortable about the QB position than I was before he was signed, especially given Vick's injury history.

As a Saints fan, I love the direction my team is headed but I am concerned if anything should happen to Brees. I am looking at this signing as I did the signing of Carr with the Panthers in that I wish the Saints are able to obtain a quality 2nd string QB hopefully with some starting experience . I think Harrington fits that bill.

Per Rotoworld: April 9, 734pm

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports Joey Harrington's three-year contract with the Falcons is worth $6 million.

The deal includes a $2.7 million signing bonus, $1 million in incentives likely tied to playing time, and all but guarantees Harrington will be Mike Vick's backup in 2007. Bad news for D.J. Shockley and Chris Redman.

Are they crazy?

This is veteran back-up borderline starter money in today's football. It is almost exact to Carr's contract.

A good pick up for Atlanta! He doesn't threaten Vick and he has enough experience to fill in if Vick gets hurt while their training the real back-up.
