"Animal House" could exist and still be a funny movie without Belushi, but "Blues Brothers" could not.
While maybe true, seems like a weird qualifier considering how far over the top JB's Bluto puts that movie compared to what it would be.

Greatness per second of screen time that might be one of the best roles ever.
Bluto has a bunch of great scenes, but he's not essential to the movie. "Animal House" is more of an ensemble movie, while "Blues Brothers" is the Belushi & Aykroyd show. That's why I think BB is a better example of Belushi's legacy. It'll probably be Aykroyd's top legacy as well.

Yeah, ok.  Gotcha.  Agreed.  I was thinking more better role rather than legacy type thing.

Animal House and it's not close
Blues Brothers, and saying it isn't close is a lame answer to the question.

Belushi showed his comedic range and talent in singing, dancing, and his terrific physical comedy in BB.  If you think Animal House is the better movie, and I disagree with that, that's ok.  But Belushi's performance in Blue's Brothers is downright brilliant, and he was the lead.  In Animal House he was a standout, but also just another actor in the film.  Him begging for his life in the sewer or him pulling the check shell game on the hicks is right up there with anything in Animal House, probably better.  I picked the Dining Hall scene because I've read they just let him do that whole scene impromptu, his genius was...well, genius.

I'm honestly surprised by the results. I thought it wouldn't even be close in favor of Blues Brothers.
I don't disagree with anything that DD and others state about Belushi and how great he was in BB - he was fantastic, but when talking about legacy you are basically saying "what do  people think about when they think of Belushi" - for most it's Animal House because it's such a great movie.  I think the voting reflects that.  Marlon Brando was probably better in A Streetcar Named Desire or Last Tango in Paris but people would vote for Godfather every time because it's so popular - ignoring that he was just a bit player in the movie.

Bluto is the dawn - the monkey & the monolith - of deconstructive comedy. Belushi consumed or destroyed everything in his path - the fata morgana of everyone who grew up with rules they didn't like - in Animal House and showed you the utter sense in doing so within his character. It was the starting pistol for blowin' #### up reeeeal good and we aint stopped yet.
