Not unexpected, but still sad news in Baltimore that Jonathan Ogden is announcing his retirement tomorrow.
He was the original Raven -- taken with the #4 pick in the draft following the team's move from Cleveland. Ray Lewis was taken later in that same first round.
Art Modell really wanted to pick Lawrence Phillips to help sell tickets in his new city, but he deferred to Ozzie Newsome's judgment during Ozzie's first draft as a GM.
Ogden was really an incredible player. Fantastic in pass protection because he combined immense size with quickness and precision technique. But also a road grader who destroyed Defensive Ends in the run game. I think people underrate him a little bit because of his struggles with Dwight Freeny in games at Indy in recent years, but Freeny's success only underscores how much JO shut down every pass rusher in his prime. The Titans used to move Kearse to the other end of the line of scrimmage, just because they knew he could do nothing vs. Ogden.
I'm biased, but to me Ogden was the best Tackle in the game since Munoz.
Shaping up as quite a Hall of Fame class for 2013. Favre, Ogden, Strahan. Who else will be first ballot that year? Sapp?
