Josh Morgan a starter in SF? (1 Viewer)

Based on the news below - is Josh Morgan now the starter opposite Bruce in SF? Does this now leave Bryant Johnson undraftable, and Morgan the hot pickup in Martz's offense? I've been hearing people compare Morgan to Colston and Boldin...Bryant Johnson only signed a 1 year deal for $2 million, so he could conceivably be a bench player this year. Your thoughts??What kind of numbers do you expect from Morgan this year??

Arnaz Battle (hamstring) and Bryant Johnson (hamstring) will both miss the 49ers' third preseason game Thursday against Chicago. If Johnson was going to unseat rookie Josh Morgan to start, he needed to play this week. Instead, Johnson may open the season as low as a fifth receiver. Battle is considered day to day, but has hardly practiced in August.Source: Santa Rosa Press Democrat
49ers coach Mike Nolan stopped short of naming rookie wideout Josh Morgan a starter in Sunday's post-exhibition game presser.Perhaps if Bryant Johnson (hamstring) returns this week he'll have a chance to unseat Morgan, but the Virginia Tech product may be proving too good to keep out of the lineup. The success of former Hokies receivers this summer (also Eddie Royal, David Clowney) makes you wonder what's taken so long for Frank Beamer to give up on QB Sean Glennon.Source: Santa Rosa Press Democrat

I like the way he's used his body to shield defenders so far this presason. He's also attacked the ball in traffic. I like what I'm seeing from this kid.

I don't think he'll have a year like Boldin or Colston had. But he could be very useful this year and is clearly a good dynasty prospect. Maybe he is this year's Dwayne Bowe?

This guy was getting a lot of hype in the Shark Pool a week or two again and now it's all quiet.

I heard he was sick and missed a few practices but any more word on what's going on in the bay with this guy?

Colston had Brees who is an outstanding QB. Morgan has a no-name QB. Odds of him being the next Colston: 150-1.

Could he put up Colston-like numbers with JT O'Sullivan at QB instead of Brees? Not likely.

Could he be the go-to WR in a Martz system, develop a rapport with O'Sullivan and put up solid numbers week-to-week? Definitely.

Odds are never great for a rookie WR to put up monster numbers with a journeyman QB but... who was Boldin's QB his rookie year again? Just sayin'...

The odds are a hundred to one against ANY PLAYER being the next Boldin or Colston--those guys had historic seasons for rookie WRs, especially unheralded ones. But I DO think that the scouts let a gem slip through as Morgan has shown that he has the skills to be a starting NFL WR. He has shown a good rapport with the QB and he has a great OC who has a record of taking guys like him and making them into stars. I expect a 65 receptions for 1000 yards and 5 TDs is well within the realm of possibility.
