Josh Morgan a target of the Jags (1 Viewer)

I recognize it's a slow news period outside of the Peyton Manning drama, and we'll start seeing a lot more free agent meat on the bones once the FA period beings in earnest. But I have to say, if I'm a long suffering Jags fan, this headline (if true) just depresses me to tears.

I'm not saying Morgan isn't of SOME value. And I'm not saying that this headline precludes the Jags from going after other WR options. But just the same, is Josh Morgan the kind of WR the Jags should be targeting specifically? This is a franchise that's been bereft of real WR talent for too long, and -- to me -- TARGETING a guy like Morgan is just more of the same. If he's a guy that fits into your salary structure and could be a complementary weapon, then fine, but do you ever really make those guys a priority?

Again, I realize this is just a blog post from a 49ers beat writer, so it's quite possibly irrelevant. But I saw the headline and thought, "same old Jags."

He's definitely a low end WR, not a special playmaker by any means.

One thing he does do very well for a WR though is block. That has more value to some than to others, and that's why for example ATL and then MIN kept Michael Jenkins as a starter for so long (Jenkins was a lot better receiver than Morgan too early on, I'm not suggesting he wasn't).

I think they see the slot filled by Mike Thomas and after that every WR they have is fodder. Likely they see Morgan as an inexpensive secondary piece as the WR2, with the WR1 "splash" still to be made. If they view him as more than that, yeah, they are out to lunch.

In leaving San Francisco and going to Jacksonville he would raise the average talent level of BOTH WR corps in the process. :pokey:

Let's also keep in mind that Gene Smith their GM has done a bunch of head scratching things.

Last year they went through the entire pre-season with Garrard as their starter, and just before the season began, cut him. Didn't demote or IR him, cut him. Why make that decision so late, with no starter reps for the backup?

I know people always point to Del Rio, but Smith is the GM.

Also last season, RB #2 Rashad Jennings had hammy issues early in the season and Smith stuck him on IR when, according to Jennings, he was OK and ready to go by Week 5. Per Jennings, he pleaded in Smith's office not to do this and Smith just ignored him. They started the season with a lot of questions too about MJD's knee and were damn lucky he came through OK because the backup (Karim) sucked.

I think Gene Smith must have a screw loose, so nothing he does surprises me any more.

I think we went through this before with Jason Hill. Will likely see a similar result.
Oh yeah, I was going to mention that one too. Cut your starting WR? Flat out cut him? If he's that bad, that close to the chopping block, why is he your starter? And if he's good enough to be your starter one week, how is he not even good enough to be on the team the next? Just weird.

So what you are telling me is that even picking Morgan up this weekend as WR #7-8 was a waste my time and roster space?

I've picked him up as a bottom of the roster stash in a few leagues, because I think he if goes to the right team (Carolina would probably be a good fit), he could put up decent WR3 level numbers. If he goes to Jacksonville, I can't see any reason to hang on to him.

I don't agree CP. I actually think he's the 49ers best playmaking WR on the roster. An indictment of Crab, perhaps, but Morgan is the one explosive big play guy the team has (at WR). He can take that 12 yard slant or out, make a guy miss, and take it to the house. Between injuries and qb futility, he really hasn't had a chance to shine. I'd love to see him back in SF as WR2, and I still say that with a healthy Morgan and Ginn we are talking about #6.I realize I'm in the minority here, but I like his game and upside (still).

As a guy who took a WW flyer on Morgan last year, I greatly resent the Jags interest in Josh Morgan. :hot:

But look at the free-agent crop of WR that has been thinned by tags. I think you hit the nail on the head there with the bolded. If you bring in to be your #2 and follow it up with a WR in one of the first 2 rounds. I'm fine with it.Jags WR corps has only direction it can go.

The other part of it is that Josh Morgan is a known commodity to Jerry Sullivan the new (and well-respected) Jags WR coach. that's the part that gives me some hope. Jags WR coach last year was Johnny Cox who was promoted from offensive quality control and then fired in JDR shakeup.

If Gene Smith uses the money he would spend on a guy like Colston, and uses it to beef up a couple positions (WR2, OL, DE, TE2), I'm fine with it. The Jags have multiple holes to fill and if they think this is a guy they can sign early to fill a spot and move on, then so be it.

This.I hope to see a complete overhaul of the Jags WR rotation. Maybe Jarrett Dillard replaces Osgood as teh special teams WR you keep.

Lots of good comments in here.

- Jags ALWAYS set the bar! (sarcasm)

- Gene Smith SUCKS! (Seriously. He has to be one of if not THE worst GM in the NFL)

- What does it matter what WRs you have when Blaine "I hear footsteps! I think I'll just curl up in the fetal position here" Gabbert is your QB?

I also found it funny how they cut Garrard, cut their best WR in Jason Hill, and IR Jennings. More proof that Gene Smith sucks. I lost respect for Khan when I found out they were keeping Gene Smith and not punting him along with Del Rio. If Gene is still the GM next year, I'm turning in my Jag fan card and walking away.
