Was his contract with The Dolphins up? Just trying to figure out how he can retire then sign with another team 3 days later. Don't the Dolphins have rights to him?

He was unsigned. He retired in the first place because nobody wanted to sign him. (He said there were teams that wanted him, but nobody that needed him. I suspect it was a euphemism for "Nobody offered me more than the vet minimum.")Mr. Chumley said:

Miami released him assuming he was going to retire, he did his Chargers retirment thing and then went to NE. Now Miami, the team that released him to retire gets to face him for division titles.
I think that if a player says they retire they should at least be locked out of the NFL for 1 season. I have a lot of respect for Seau as a player, but this retire/unretire stuff gets old. That goes for all pro sports really and trickles down to even the last few years Favre 'will he retire or not' stuff. I am an a**hole and if I had my way if someone sugests they may retire they would have 2 weeks to decide or be auto-retired by default. In that case or if they say they are retired they can not become active for 1 year.
How many times did Michael Jordan retire? I can't remeber. However, retire/unretire stuff messes with team planing and is not fair to the coaches and GMs who need to see the big picture early to plan for their teams success.

There are other guys out there NE could acquire that should worry MIA more. If Edwards/AJ can't get along and NE was smart they'd just pull the trigger on some backup OL for Edwards. That would be a difference maker for division titles. Seau is no longer a difference maker.... but he could have a good effect in the locker room even if he's a backup. I don't begrudge Seau one last gasp on a superbowl contender. Let the ol' man play another year. He's earned it. Heck, there's even an outside chance he goes to the ProBowl just based on his name. Can you go to the ProBowl if you don't even start?

Sure but if you officially retire there should be some penalty for that. At least a year off the available to play list. Retiring is a word that should not be thrown around to when it really means, "Looking for a deal". If MIA let him go he could have gone into free agency if he wanted to play. When the word "retire" comes out that means you no longer intend to play in the NFL. You are right, his leadership as a back up can be priceless. I just think retiring should mean retiring, not shoping around.

I agree. The term "officially retire" should not be taken as, "Officially, well, maybe, I might, unless a team offers me some more money to stick around." Retire and leave. As for others in the same bubble, Favre is a classic player, but the best thing he could do for Green Bay rebuilding right now is retire. If he wants to stick around this year, fine. However, he would help Green Bay a ton if he did it as a consultant to Rogers. I know that will never happen but if Favre does the "retire/won't retire" dance next year like he did this year and he decides to stay I hope it will be as a side line mentor like Kitna did for Carson. That is the best thing Favre could leave Green Bay on his way out.
He didn't decide to retire until well after he was released. Between the time he was released and the time he "retired," he was shopping himself around.

Sure, but from what I have seen and read it was assumed that he was going to retire which I would guess enticed the release. The key phrase is "decided to retire". At that point a player should be retired for no less than one year. No matter if they were shopping around or not. If you retire, then you retire. Seau is a legend and a future HOFer, no doubt. A class act, well until this week. But, shopping yourself and using the retirment gig to boost a contract is crap. Oh well.

he should have retired a few years ago after the game he kept playing in with the bad shoulder, lots of determination, but no ability to tackle...

EXACTLY!So hats off to Seau for getting the opportunity he wanted, and hats off to Piolifor sourcing a quality talent as a bridge solution.Next issue...?
