Just got back from Japan. They're doing it right. (1 Viewer)

Japan is a relatively small nation with not a whole lot of useable land but a ton of people.

Their social norms and constructs were developed centuries ago.

It is also one of the most homogenous societies on earth.

We’re a nation full of people...

That craps blue Twinkies if our HOA sends us a note about our garbage cans being out overnight.

That invented “business casual” because wearing a necktie is too hard.

That start threads because a baseball umpire, making $20 a game, called their kid out on a fluke play in the tri-county wonderama biannual U8 tourney.

That bust a blood vessel if the driver ahead of them on the interstate isn’t breaking the law enough.

That send me emails (last week) because they think 40 minutes of homework is interfering with Aidyn’s summer basketball and 7v7 football and personal trainer sessions.

I lived there for six weeks and had some family live there for over a year.  They may be polite to you and appear respectful, but that is superficial.  You are a gaijin and will never be truly accepted.

Had numerous girls in my group complain about being assaulted on trains or having drunk businessmen consistently proposition them for sex.

My point is that they have their dark side as well, you just dont see it at first glance.

Why do you hate Aidyn?

Hot damn!  Now we're talking!

You are right, here.  I acknowledge that 7 days isn't enough to fully appreciate the good and bad side of their culture.  I did sense the superficiality, but I'm ok with that in the customer service context.  I don't need to see 'real' if it means you're imposing your personality and your bad habits onto me while I'm trying to eat a meal.  I also sensed that they don't like outsiders, especially Americans.  Despite seeing me struggle with two large suitcases up and down subway steps, no one bothered to offer help.  I will give Americans credit for that.  Someone, probably multiple people over here, would have offered help.  Was it because I was a foreigner or just the way of their culture, I don't know.

There was one woman who noticed we didn't have an umbrella and actually gave my wife hers.  She was an outlier though.

Pretty sure every generation has said this about the next.
All the more reason to keep talking trash about the next...it might be causal, and we can't risk the next generation turning into a suck sandwich.

I'm looking at you, Millenials.

So it's basically the foreign version of Minnesota Nice?

I haven't spent time in Japan outside of the Tokyo airport for a 4 hour layover, but my experience with them when they travel is very negative.  They are some of the most obnoxious, condescending, and self-centered people I have ever met.

I worked for a Japanese company (CA office) for about a year. They're extremely tough on their employees in order to maintain their perfect outward reputation.

I worked in finance for a huge Japanese company for 2 years.  It was torture and by far the worst job I have ever had.  I was so happy when I left.  My supervisor was upset that I wasn't staying for the year end, and asked me to delay leaving.  No chance in hell I was going to do that for them.  Funny thing is that I left to go back to working at a Big 4 firm, which was a far superior and less stressful working environment, and Big 4 is certainly not known for being "less stressful".

I spent the last week in Okinawa and Tokyo and, while there was a large culture shock, I came away very impressed with their culture; specifically, the way people handle themselves in public.  They're quiet, polite, clean, and organized.  There was no hearing people's phone or Facetime conversations.  There was no garbage or graffiti on the subway.  There was no attitude from any customer service rep.  It was peaceful and efficient.  Why don't we have that here in the states?
They also have the lowest amount of gun deaths in the world - I believe last year they had like 6 or 8 gun deaths. In the time it took me to post this, we prob had about the same.

Have worked for a Japanese owned company for 17 years. Been very, very good to me. Many cultural traits we should borrow from.

They can't make desserts for ####.

They have the strictest gun control laws in the world. Rifles can only be owned if the owner had it in their possession prior to the ban in the 70's. If the owner dies, his heirs are legally required to turn the rifle in to the government and can't keep it. Handguns are completely outlawed, even holding one is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

I'll let the folks in the Politics forum debate the merits of these laws. Strangely enough, one of the biggest tourist businesses in Hawaii for Japanese visitors happens to be going to shooting ranges.

  They all taste as if they are made with condensed fish tank water.
At a business dinner, I recall working my way through multiple courses at a formal dinner that usually consisted of a full fish on the plate. After 9 or 10 rounds of this, I was hoping for some payoff at the end. Nope.  ####ing fruit as the dessert.

The most offensive thing in this list is the spelling of aidyn

Respect is a dying.  Everyone is looking for the next zing, media doesn't help.  The headlines of some of their "articles" are terrible.  I think it comes a lot from the way social media works, people feel empowered to do and say the extreme because they don't have to look the person in the face.  As that becomes more and more the norm it starts to leak into the everyday personal reactions as well.
Sorry but the massive cultural gap between us and Japan was there long before social media.

Good chance a culture with their values lends itself to staying homogeneous, so it will stay that way until they allow more immigrants.
