Kamerion Wimbley traded to Oakland (1 Viewer)

Scout.com's Adam Caplan reports that the Raiders have acquired OLB Kamerion Wimbley from the Browns in exchange for "undisclosed draft compensation."

Wimbley, the No. 13 overall pick in 2006, led Cleveland in sacks last year, so the move is surprising at first glance. However, the Browns have stockpiled quality depth at outside linebacker, and could turn to Marcus Benard (3.5 sacks in '09), Jason Trusnik, Alex Hall, or 2009 second-round pick David Veikune opposite Matt Roth. In Oakland, Wimbley will likely start at left defensive end, replacing Greg Ellis. The 26-year-old will play with his hand in the dirt for the first time since Florida State.

Interesting from a fantasty perspective. Wimberly was good enough to be rostered in most formats as a LB, but with the decline of 4-3 teams he become immediately more valuable as 4-3 end for the people who already have him.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out, but the bold has me :goodposting: .

The question is he a DE or SLB now? I like to think he's a DE with Greg Ellis being released, but they're thin at LB too.

i think they plan on giving Matt Shaughnessy every chance to start opposite seymour. kinda makes me believe that they plan on Morrison being gone and Ricky Brown moving from SLB to MLB opening up the vacated SLB for Wimbley.

Tom Cable recently said Wimbley is going to be the SLB. Unless he is the 3rd down designated pass rusher, looks like almost no fantasy value.

Makes Shaughnessy the favorite for extended playing time at RDE again, though. Can't be good for Thomas Howard either, I suppose. Wimbley, Brown and Scott at linebacker. Not an all-around talent among them.

Not so sure I see Scott at WILL. He didnt look good there last season. I think its Howard's job. JMO

I don't necessarily disagree. I'm having trouble finding the direct quote, but Cable praised Scott earlier this month and apparently again during his interview at the owners' meetings yesterday. So, for now, it appears that the Raiders prefer Scott over Howard at OLB.

Seems to be a summary of recent comments from Cable...

Kamerion Wimbley will play strongside linebacker in the Raiders' 4-3 defense -- the position he played in the Browns' 3-4 defense before he was traded to Oakland.

Cable likes Wimbley's size and ability to rush the passer. He also likes how Trevor Scott developed as a weakside linebacker last season. Not sure where restricted free agent Thomas Howard fits in now, but we'll see -- and no, they are not switching to a 3-4 defense.

So basically they are not expecting Kirk Morrison back at all, or is Ricky Brown again the odd-man out?

If Wimbley is at SLB, and Scott is at WLB, then either Brown or Morrison is going to be out of the starting lineup. Curious as to which way they go...

I think there's a good chance Morrison loses his job, but considering Howard and Morrison are both RFA's it's tough to say how it shakes out. I also wonder if Scott can hang onto the WLB job.
