Keeper/Auction Format Strategy (1 Viewer)

Our legue is an auction format whereas you can keep up to 2 players from your preivious season's roster (if he meets all the criteria). The players' previous salary is deducted from your current salary cap and you go into the auction with whatever remains..

Most years you have to make a decision between low priced "decent" players you had last year....medium priced "good" players you had last year....or....a high priced "stud" that you had last year.

As I see it, there are 3 basic options when it comes to declaring your keepers in this league

1) Keep the lowest price "decent" players and go into the auction with the most cash....

2) Keep the highest priced meat on your roster and go into the aucion impotent but with talent

3) Split it....Keep your high priced "stud" and maybe a low priced player and medium priced player and go into the auction with SOME money...but certainly not enough to sway bidding...

For example:

Current roster contains mediocre players who are of no concern...BUT...there are THREE players (only two can be kept) that spark interest...

1) Jay Cutler. $1 Picked up last year at auction for this purpose...the 2007 season

2) Javon Walker. Cutlers' threat......$17

3) Chad Johnson. Stud.....$38

Would you keep.....

1) J. Cutler and Javon Walker. QB/WR threat

Cost: $18

Salary Cap Remaining: $102

2) J. Cutler and C. Johnson. Low cost QB....high priced stud.

Cost: $39

Salary Cap Remaining: $81

3) C. Johnson and J. Walker. Both decent WR's

Cost: $55

Salary Cap Remaining: $65

4) Throw the ALL back and start the season with a full $120 salary cap but some very prominant players kept by other teams

Basically what I'm asking is......

Do you go with the theory that a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush??

Is there anyone here who is in a league like this??

I am not in a league like that, but I think you keep Cutler for sure. Also, I think I need to know score and starting lineup rules to answer between the WRs.

Do projections for all the players, use them to calculate what salaries players are worth, and keep the players whose salaries make them the best value compared to the salary you think they are worth.

And if there is no limit to how many seasons you can keep them, consider also if you expect the player's value to go up or down in future seasons, and whether they will be an added value if you can keep them at the same price for multiple years.

Keeping Cutler at a buck is a no-brainer. And if Javon costs less than half of Chad, I think that's pretty much a no-brainer too. Toss Ocho Cinco back into the pile. He simply costs too much to retain, and you're gonna need cash for RBs. By the way who ARE your RBs, and what RBs do you forsee becoming available? In auctions, I would recommend spending the bulk of your cash at that position, getting the cheapest decent starting QB you can (Cutler at a buck is perfect), and finding value at the WR/TE positions as it filters through the bidding. Good luck.

Pretty much exactly what I was thinking.....and the questions you asked have been the same questions I've asked myself over and over....SO...the big question was...'IS a bird in the hand worth 2 in the bush?"Looking at all the other players who have met the qualifications to be kept makes it appear that RB's are going to be few and far between at auction time. People are scared that if they toss their RB back into the fray, they'll more to get him back.We find out one week before the auction exactly WHO gets tagged and kept.MY RB position is.....I have C. Portis ($30) AND L. Betts ($10)I really don't want to keep him (them) for that much money...considering their situation...SO....With C. Johnson being MY stud and costing $38 (the highest price paid for a WR), it makes me wonder if I should keep him??It's going to be interesting.....

There is your answer. If you keep Johnson he will be the highest salaried WR in the league. If you let him go and try to resign him during the auction you can probably do so for nearly the same salary. You need to keep Walker. He has about the same level of value but his salary is half as much. You wouldn't be able to resign him for $17 on the open market.

I play in a similar league. We have a $200 cap but can only keep one player from the previous year. We also have to pay a $10 premium to keep a player (his auction price last season + $10). The premium makes it interesting becuause a lot of studs end up going back in the auction pool (they can get too expensive to keep). As a previous poster said, yes it comes down to value, but it also comes down to relative value. You need to take into account the draft tendancies of your league-mates, your league scoring system, # of teams and roster spots available (supply and demand), number and value of other players being kept, etc. For example, if top-tier RB's are always being purchased at prices well above their relative value to your scoring system, you will probably want to keep a top-tier RB - even if it seems a bit expensive to do so. It means that other top-tier RB's on other teams will likey be kept and those available will be very expensive. If your league tends to undervalue QB's, you probably don't want to spend much to keep a QB as you can likely pick one up relatively cheap in the auction. You simply need to determine which of your keeper candidates will save you the most amount of $$ during your auction draft relative to how much you would have to spend to fill their spot on your roster via the auction.

Hope that makes sense?

This hits the nail on the head.Cutler will go for more than $1.

Walker will go for more than $17.

Johnson will likely go for $38 or less.

So if you want all 3 of these guys, the way you get them cheapest to toss Johnson back. In fact, you never want to keep players priced at their expected cost when you have other options that involve players below their expected cost, barring roster limit issues.

Your goal is always to buy $X of value for less than $X, while making sure you've got enough starting firepower to win the league.
