Quick info on the league...
12 teams - 4 man keeper
23 man roster during season
Head to Head - Distance/Performance Scoring
League in existence for 17 years. Group of friends.
Able to trade other teams for "protection right." No team can have less than 3 "protection rights" at any time. 48 total players will be protected leaguewide.
After our season ends, our league sets up the draft order 1-12 with 1 being the team with the worst record and 12 being the Super Bowl winner. The draft is set up like the NFL draft 1-12....1-12...1-12 etc. The reasoning is that the Super Bowl team is most likely the best team, and should have the last pick in every round. Conversely, the team with the worst record is most likely the worst team, and should have the 1st pick in every round.
Here is my question...
Is this fair for the "better" teams in the league? If you assume that each team protects 4 players and the Super Bowl winning team supposedly has the best 4 players, by drafting last in EVERY round it is safe to say that 19 of the 23 players on the weaker teams will be better than the stronger teams. That works out to be 83 % of the roster. Now I realize the NFL does the same thing, but they only draft 7 players of a 53 man roster, which is about 14 % of the roster.
I'm of the opinion that a serpentine draft after the keepers are declared would be fair for the whole league. Problem is, I am the only one that believes this.
I agree that the weaker teams need a chance to strengthen their teams, but is there a more fair way to do so?
I'm open to any ideas you guys have encountered in your leagues.
TIA.
