Keeper Leage Draft Question (1 Viewer)

Quick info on the league...

12 teams - 4 man keeper

23 man roster during season

Head to Head - Distance/Performance Scoring

League in existence for 17 years. Group of friends.

Able to trade other teams for "protection right." No team can have less than 3 "protection rights" at any time. 48 total players will be protected leaguewide.

After our season ends, our league sets up the draft order 1-12 with 1 being the team with the worst record and 12 being the Super Bowl winner. The draft is set up like the NFL draft 1-12....1-12...1-12 etc. The reasoning is that the Super Bowl team is most likely the best team, and should have the last pick in every round. Conversely, the team with the worst record is most likely the worst team, and should have the 1st pick in every round.

Here is my question...

Is this fair for the "better" teams in the league? If you assume that each team protects 4 players and the Super Bowl winning team supposedly has the best 4 players, by drafting last in EVERY round it is safe to say that 19 of the 23 players on the weaker teams will be better than the stronger teams. That works out to be 83 % of the roster. Now I realize the NFL does the same thing, but they only draft 7 players of a 53 man roster, which is about 14 % of the roster.

I'm of the opinion that a serpentine draft after the keepers are declared would be fair for the whole league. Problem is, I am the only one that believes this.

I agree that the weaker teams need a chance to strengthen their teams, but is there a more fair way to do so?

I'm open to any ideas you guys have encountered in your leagues.

TIA.

Here's your answer: Hybrid

Rounds 1, 2, and 3: Straight Draft

AFTER rd 3 til the end: Serpentine

That way, after 3 rounds of the draft, everyone should have 7 players on their roster (4 keeper + 3 picks). At this point, teams should be closer in strength and it doesn't totally screw the champion.

You need to keep it as a straight draft to give the bottom teams any chance of rebuilding and being competive. I run a 10 team, 4 keeper, 18 player roster league and do the straight draft for 7 years. Being as big of a league that you are and as many keepers it would be difficult to rebuild a team from drafting the 49th best player in the nfl each year. I just went out to the weekly info and look at Dodd's top 250 players. He gives each player a trade value staring at 2500 and then sliding down. I compared my team (since I won my league this year) to the worst team in my league. With LT, SJ, tiki and Holt as my top four players who rank 1st 4th 8th and 17th. These would be my projected keeps (minius tiki, but for sake of argument will keep his 8th ranked value). The worst place team has the 9th, 18th, 33rd and 34th ranked players as his keepers for next year. His starting line up has a trade value of 4446 and mine is 7601. In a staight draft, the person drafting first will add 2267 in value to his team giving him a total of 6713. I will add 1724 making my team trade value total 9325. By going to the serpintine or a modified serpintine with a few round as a straight draft, my team total vaule only gets better because I'm getting better draft positions.Obviously players will not be drafted straing down a list based on a trade value line, and the influx of rookies and developing players will leap frog into the upper levels of the list gives some value draft picks 49 to 80. The problem with those picks are that it is very difficult to say that any of these players will be a sure thing. So those who study and do their research will find thier players from where ever they draft, but as a commish, I think I need to give the weeker teams as much chance to improve their teams to keep them interest in the league and want to come back from year to year. I would like to know more about the auction leagues. Is there any decent software out there for league management? If anyone has some recomendations, please let me know. Especially curious about how free agents are handled durning the course of the season. Thanks
