Keeper League 1st Year w/Keepers Article (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
My freelance article, "How to Prepare for a Keeper League's First Year with Keepers" at http://subscribers.footballguys.com/2006/0...e_woodall01.php , appeared today.

Since I hope to revise it for future years, I am wide open for and happy to consider any and ALL feedback. Of course, impressions of an immediate nature are welcome and helpful. I would be especially interested in hearing impressions from people who put the method, or some variant of it, into practice.

Thanks in advance for your constructive criticisms. I hope they will help me make it better next year.

Here is the team I ended up drafting in that league, using my method. Not asking people to rate it, cause this would be the wrong forum for that. All I am doing is showing you what my method got me in that 'sample league'.

I will post all the rosters later. Maybe even the entire pre-draft notes from the league so you can see the whole process if you are interested. And the draft itself. Would anyone like to see all that?

Here is the whole league, analyzed per Step Four of the Ten-Step process (keep in mind this is all as of late June, so news since then is not reflected):Hustler 1.01, 2.10…

QB Kerry Collins-FA (2)

QB Rex Grossman-CHI (10)

QB Jake Plummer-DEN (3) overpriced

QB Alex Smith-SF (19)

RB JJ Arrington-ARZ (4)

RB Tatum Bell-DEN (7) decent value

RB Domanick Davis-HOU (1)

RB Warrick Dunn-ATL (8) aging, but productive

RB Ryan Moats-PHI (10)

RB Marcel Shipp-ARZ (18)

RB Antowain Smith-HOU (10)

WR Arnaz Battle-SF (19)

WR Laveranues Coles-NYJ (5) overpriced

WR Matt Jones-JAC (10) about right, could be a bargain if he beats Wilford out

WR Greg Lewis-PHI (15)

WR Rod Smith-DEN (10)

WR Steve Smith-CAR (6) MUST KEEP

TE Todd Heap-BAL (11) good value, hard to protect this spot

PK Shayne Graham-CIN (17)

DEF Denver (10)

Hustler’s Comments: “Hustlers preliminary keepers: Steve Smith; Dom. Davis; Warrick Dunn”

Analysis: Steve Smith is a must-keep at (6) and Dunn (8) is also a decent value. Domanick Davis at (1) is not overpriced, but why keep him for your first pick when you can keep someone else and take him with your first pick? Davis is not a keeper unless the 1st pick is traded away or another 1st round is acquired, even then he is overpriced. Other values on the team include Bell (7), and possibly Matt Jones (10). There is little else that is not either at or below value, except Arnaz Battle who is a bargain at (19) but hardly exciting.

PROJECTIONS: STEVE SMITH (6.10), TATUM BELL (7.01), WARRICK DUNN (8.10)

Hitmen 1.02, 2.09…

Hitmen’s Comments: “I'm not sure there's anybody on my team to keep....

I'm trying to rebuild this team, and I'm taking a little longer range plan than I'd like.”

Analysis: Thomas Jones at (8) is a clear value and likely his surest keeper. Jeremy Shockey (9) is his next surest value. Remaining solid players are all at or overpriced. Wilford (10) and Clayton (5) have good shots at equaling or beating their prices, but can be had for much less (i.e.: sleepers, why keep?). Gore (10) is likely the third best pick; he won’t fall ten rounds and has boom potential. All remaining players carry high speculative prices (Lloyd, Randle-El, Colbert, Jones, Bennett are too wild for wildcards). The QBs are all way overpriced, as is Dillon (3).

PROJECTION: THOMAS JONES (8.09), JEREMEY SHOCKEY (9.02), FRANK GORE (10.09)

Momojuju 1.03, 2.08…

QB Jake Delhomme-CAR (4)

QB Byron Leftwhich-JAC (10)

QB Billy Volek-TEN (10)

QB Kurt Warner-ARZ (8) Good price, but cast here outshines him

RB Cedric Benson-CHI (13) Good value, questionable production this year

RB Ahman Green-GB (10)

RB Priest Holmes-KC (10)

RB Edgerrin James-AZ (1) Not a value at 1.03, but wont drop

RB Kevin Jones-DET (2) may be at price, questions abound

RB Chester Taylor-MIN (10) Great Value

RB Carnell Williams-TB (6) Must Keep

WR Drew Bennett-TEN (10)

WR Donald Driver-GB (7) right price

WR Braylon Edwards-CLE (10)

WR Terry Glenn-DAL (10)

WR Darrell Jackson-SEA (5) Nice value

WR Andre Johnson-HOU (3) priced a bit high

TE Alge Crumpler-ATL (10)

PK John Kasay-CAR (10)

DEF Carolina (10)

Momojuju’s Comments: “I'm still looking over the cast of thousands.... But I’m leaning towards keeping E James (1); C Williams (6); C Taylor (10); This will get my rbs in good shape for the season.”

Analysis: Blessed with numerous values, including Darrell Jackson (5), Carnell Williams (6), Donald Driver (7), Chester Taylor (10) and Cedric Benson (13). Top 3 picks James (1), Jones (2) and Johnson (3) could all be had for the same pick (or less for the latter two). While almost all the remaining players are ok values, they are also all unexciting and overly speculative. Unfortunately, with the keepers everyone else hangs onto, James would probably not fall to Momojuju in round 1, so he probably should be protected, even though it is not a value play.

PROJECTIONS: EDGERRIN JAMES (1.03), CARNELL WILLIAMS (6.08), CHESTER TAYLOR (10.08)

Damn Yankees 1.04, 2.07…

QB Marc Bulger-STL (2)

QB Trent Dilfer-SF (19)

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick-STL (10)

QB Eli Manning-NYG (9) Great value

RB Mike Alstott-TB (10)

RB Kevan Barlow-SF (8)

RB Cedric Houston-NYJ (10)

RB Rudi Johnson-CIN (3) MUST KEEP

RB Curtis Martin-NYJ (5)

WR Deion Branch-NE (7) Good Value

WR Tory Holt-STL (1) Slightly overpriced, and might fall to 1.04

WR TJ Houshmanzadeh-CIN (10) Good value, but better here

WR Eddie Kennison-KC (11)

WR Keenan McCardell-SD (14)

WR Donte Stallworth-NO (12) Good value but better here

TE Tony Gonzalez-KC (4) ok price, but better value elsewhere here

PK Lawrence Tynes-KC (10)

DEF Tampa (16)

DEF New York Giants (10)

Damn Yankees comments: None, so far. Has not logged into the new league board.

Analysis: Rudi Johnson is a must keep at (3), and Eli Manning is a great value at (9). The only other real value picks on this team include TJ Houshmanzadeh (10) and Donte Stallworth (12). Deion Branch is a good value at (7). DY’s best players are at price or overpriced by at least a round each (Holt 1, Gonzales 4, Martin 5). He has a tough choice, but I would gamble that the RB premium will allow Holt to fall to me at 1.04 and try to capture the value in Branch and Manning. Even if it fails, there will be other excellent WRs available for him later.

PROJECTIONS: RUDI JOHNSON (3.04), DEION BRANCH (7.04), ELI MANNING (9.04)

Bigger Ego than TO’s Comments: None, has yet to log onto the board.

Analysis: Shaun Alexander (1) is one of the few other first round must keeps as he would never fall to fifth and makes an excellent anchor. Terrell Owens (3) is another must keep, since he would not fall that far and even with the risk is worth a 3. The last keeper should be chosen from values Matt Hasselbeck (5) and Roy Williams (6), though Porter and Robinson at 10 each aren’t bad risks for the price. Favre at (2) is too high priced. Lewis at (4) is likely and Bruce (7) are very risky. There are no other good candidates unless something breaks in camps. Between Hasselbeck and Roy, Williams is the better value.

PROJECTION: SHAUN ALEXANDER (1.05), TERRELL OWENS (3.05), ROY WILLIAMS (6.06)

Druid’s Comments: “…the Druid Pack is looking at hanging on to: 1) Clinton Portis- should be a steal in the 3rd; 2) Larry Fitzgerald-decent value in the 6th; 3) Either Santana Moss as a 13th rounder or Reggie Wayne as a 4th rounder.”

Analysis: Larry Fitzgerald (6) and Clinton Portis (3) are both must-keeps with obvious value. Santana Moss (13) is a clear cut awesome value, but on the same team as Portis. Joey Galloway (10) is another strong value. Highly useful but non-value priced players to choose from are McGahee (2) and Wayne (4). Players who may represent values but are speculative or risky include Taylor (9), and Cooley (15). All other things being roughly equal, apply the NFL principle of best available player…take Wayne (4), not overpriced, a slight value of about one round, diversifies away from the Washington duo.

PROJECTED KEEPERS: CLINTON PORTIS (3.06), REGGIE WAYNE (4.05), LARRY FITZGERALD (6.06),

Stuck in Traffic’s comments: No comments available.

Analysis: Barber and Brown are both simply had too cheaply not to keep. The remaining contenders are Chad Johnson (had for about what he can be drafted for), Carson Palmer (way too expensive), Deuce McCallister (too expensive this year and risky), and Joe Horn (just a shade expensive, probably can be had for a fifth in the draft). The QBs, great K and DEF are all just too easily replaced in the draft. Other things being roughly equal, take the best skill player: Johnson.

PROJECTED KEEPERS: CHAD JOHNSON (2.04), TIKI BARBER (3.07), RONNIE BROWN (8.04)

Snickersnack’s Comments: “I am leaning toward Gates, Boldin and, believe it or not, Willie Parker. I hate to toss Manning and Julius Jones back, and nothing is definite there, but it is what I am thinking for now. It gives me 4 picks in a row before I have to skip two rounds. It also means (barring some big shift in the ratio of value to players) that they should have decent keeper values in the future, especially Parker.”

Analysis: Gates (5) and Boldin (6) are clearly worth much more than their costs and rank as must keeps. Manning and Jones may actually fall to those slots, so are not values. Willie Parker (17) is the best value remaining and with a TE & WR in the mix, a RB has to be taken over the rest.

PROJECTION: ANTONIO GATES (5.08), ANQUAN BOLDIN (6.03), AND WILLIE PARKER (17.08).

TE LJ Smith-PHI (10)

DEF New England (10)

Chief’s Comments: “I have really only decided on two keepers for now. 1.) LT; 2.) The other LJ; I think I would be crazy to not keep LT and Jordan will be a first rounder this year at a 3rd round cost. How do I not do that? After that... I am just not decided yet. I have some thoughts, but no decisions just yet.”

Analysis: Tomlinson can not be risked without control of the first pick, therefore one of the few must-keepers that cost a 1st round pick. would not fall to the 3rd, so he is excellent value and another must keep. Remaining big names are Harrison (2) and Ward (4), neither of whom is exactly a value pick, but not overpriced either. Best remaining values include Lee Evans (9), who is very under-priced and should improve with time, and Tom Brady (5), who is under-priced enough to justify using a slot on the deep QB position. Values with speculative elements include Foster (8) & Jurevicious (10). Taking Brady gives 3 very consistent top players and leaves the first three even rounded high picks (even.02) to get receivers.

PROJECTION: LADAINIAN TOMLINSON (1.09), LAMONT JORDAN (3.09), AND TOM BRADY (5.09)

Comeback Kids Comments: none yet.

Analysis: Larry Johnson is a runaway must-keep at (8). How’d we let him get away with that? Randy Moss (2), Steven Jackson (4), and Chris Chambers (11) all represent great value. CK is blessed to be able to take the best and leave the rest. While Westbrook (10), Burress (9) and Bledsoe (12) are all good values too, there is no need to dip for them. He might be able to leave Moss and get better with the 2, and keep a different WR, but the value gained with LJ and SJ allow him the luxury of playing it safe.

PROJECTION: RANDY MOSS (2.01), STEVEN JACKSON (4.01), LARRY JOHNSON (8.01)
