Keeper League Fire Sales (1 Viewer)

I almost only play Dynasty nowadays, but in one keeper league I got sucked into, one owner went 0-4 and put all of his studs on the block. Keepers are kept by forfeiting the round they were picked (players from rounds 1-3 NOT keepable). Draft picks from Rounds 1-3 are NOT tradable, but players you draft in those rounds may be traded.

So an 0-4 team trades Michael Turner (not keepable) for a 2012 4th Rounder and a 2012 9th Rounder. Turner has no value to a rebuilding team and 4th Round Picks are EXTREMELY valuable in this league. Some good players available in the 9th too.

The guy isn't being a sore loser, but he is throwing in the towel for 2011 and gearing up for 2012, it's obvious he drafted a bad team.

So where is that line between Quitting vs Rebuilding drawn in this scenario? Some of the owners think getting Michael Turner for a 4th Round pick is not "fair." I've barely played in Keeper leagues so I'm not sure what's viewed as acceptable in cases like this. What are some rules (if any) that keeper leagues have to avoid or restrict this kind of situation? Or is it viewed as acceptable?

As long as it's deemed a fair trade and not player dumping to help out another owner in particular, he paid his entry fee and has the right to fold up shop and get a leg up on next year.

It is much easier to build for next year in Week 5 as everyone else is worried about this season. If Turner can help the team that traded for him get into the playoffs, it could be worth it for both teams. Dynasty/keeper leagues are about predicting/anticipating the future, not waiting until something is crystal clear, by then someone else already made the move.

Apparently it's an incompetent owner problem more than it is anything else. Owners who draft poorly make teams drafting around them so much more dangerous. Or they make horrible lineup decisions that lead to losses and before you know it Andre Johnson is on the trading block. I'm assuming most of you who ran a league would kick someone out if this was a chronic problem from year to year. Too bad he's the commish haha

Not at all. I have played in leagues exactly like this. 4th rounders are the first keeper round, that makes them very valuable. To trade a player that cannot help you this next year for a player that might be a long term keeper, is a smart move. I imagine you will see more trades like this.

This seems to be exactly what makes Dynasty League trading so much easier than redraft. In this case, both teams can "win", since one team gets helped in the short term and the other in the long term.

Once you know (or are reasonably sure) you aren't going to make the playoffs, this is exactly what you/he should be doing - trading your best non-keepers for value next year.

I agree... but I think Week 5 is too early. I realize taking the "early market" set the value for what you want, but in my 12 Team 3 player Keeper, we don't have fire sales until Week 8-10. We also have a trade deadling of kickoff week 10. We also have a caveat that if you don't make the "Championship Playoffs" (6 teams), you battle in the Toilet Bowl. Winner of the Toilet Bowl takes the #1 overall draft slot. So selling all your good players means you will have a worse draft slot. Last year,in Week 9, I sold off Garcon, Ronnie Brown, Jennings & S Greene for draft picks. I still had Austin, Addai, J Stew, & Z Miller. I took #2 draft pick in TB. Selling early runs the risk of making an indifferent owner come weeks 10-14 when the playoff teams are being finalized. It could create problems for owner who are in the thick of the hunt while an opponent is facing a team that sold off the farm.

 I think you should concentrate on your own team. This guy did nothing wrong.
