Keiland Williams Role in Detroit? (1 Viewer)

Will Keiland Williams move into the #2 role in Detroit? With Best's injury history the #2 should get a big workload and possible goal line carries. I have not seen much about the situation in the news and just wondered if anyone had any insight.

He was a FB on the redskins and the redskins cut him....

Keiland isn't a full back. He was a third down back for the Redskins last year. He just happens to be good in pass protection also so they decided to use him as a fullback. He has great hands as he caught 35 balls last year in limited action and had one game where he scored 3 touchdowns against the Eagles.

He can put up numbers if given the chance to play. Better value in a PPR league.

Actually, the Redskins moved him to FB this year to see if he could beat out Sellers and be a viable backup at the position. That was his best chance to win a roster spot since the team drafted 2 RB's and traded for Hightower. Detroit didn't sign him to play FB.As an undrafted rookie he was a decent 3rd down back and played special teams. Schwartz did just compare him favorably to LeShoure wrt to his size. He's definitely an upgrade over Best in short yardage situations.

Henry agrees with the OP. Listed him as a DEEP sleeper this week

There are two backs that could have immediate value this week. One is very much under the radar, while the other has been touted for most of the last two weeks. The former is Keiland Williams (Det at TB), who was cut by the Redskins and claimed off waivers by the Lions. HC Jim Schwartz said after they claimed Williams that the plan to use him in the same manner they had planned to use rookie Mikel LeShoure. The two players are bigger backs with receiving skills and the ability to get the ball over the goal line. If the Lions make good on that, then Williams will become a hot commodity on the waiver wire next week whether he scores or not against the Bucs. The reality is that the Lions don't have a back with Williams' size on their roster. Maurice Morris is a steady, but unsexy veteran back who has to be nearing the end of the rope. Jerome Harrison, in my opinion, has been getting far too much attention in the preseason. He's the Lions' third running back at best. With Williams in the fold, Harrison may not have any value barring injury to Best, Morris or Williams. If you're looking for a flyer, take a chance on Williams based on Schwartz's claim that he'll get some carries to spell Best and potentially get the nod if/when they're at the goal line. Obviously, he's a back that we'd rather see in action before putting him into the lineup, so consider this a two-fold write-up - part-deep sleeper and a pre-emptive waiver wire call for early next week.
He looked great when given the opportunity last year. And that was when he was being somewhat focused on. I am interested to see how this plays out...

I am too but if Best were to go down wouldn't the Lions just give everyone carries until they found a hot hand to ride?

Sportsline saying he might be inactive this week... not enough practice time with the team yet.

Possibly, though I would imagine Harrison would get first shot at the primary carries with Morris filling in on pass-protection and maybe 1/3 of the runs. Just my guess.

I completely disagree.
He was very mediocre last year. He was the backup to the guy who they brought in two more guys to replace. And for all the talk about his size and goal-line/short-yardage opportunites, he wasn't particularly good at that last year.
People fell in love with him after seeing his stat line against Philly. He was the recipient of some dump offs from McNabb in a 59-28 loss and his 32-yard TD run came against what I swear were jogging Eagles' defenders.

Harrison's TD run in that same game was significantly more impressive than Keiland's entire season.
