Keiland Williams (1 Viewer)

This is a wait and see. Jim Schwartz was pimping Jerome Harrison after a good preseason and they like Morris as a blocking back. Too many RBs to roster at this point.

The Lions need SOMEONE to get the 3rd and 2 or 1 conversions. A guy to pound it up the middle. They did not have that. They might still not. But that is what he will be for, not much else.

In 14-16 team leagues, picking up a guy like this can be very valuable. If you read the whole article, it is clear that Schwartz thinks Williams could fill the exact role meant for Leshoure. That could mean 8-10 carries as well as goal line work in a highly potent offense.

This article? These are Schwartz's quotes from that article:

"We like his skill set," said Lions head coach Jim Schwartz. "He's still a young player. The Redskins went out and got (Tim) Hightower this year and he sort of got edged out in that (competition). I think we were very lucky to get him."

"(He's) a little bigger runner," Schwartz said, "very productive in a role last year for the Redskins. He scored some touchdowns, caught a lot of passes, played on third down - did a lot of different things we liked when we saw him this year in preseason. "He played exclusively as a fullback (in Washington), but we saw him as a runner at LSU. He's a little bit bigger than some of the guys that we have."
Phil Zaroo from MLive is the one who thinks Williams will replace Leshoure. Schwartz gave no indication what role he sees for Williams or how he will be used in the rotation.

If you play with deep rosters, this is pretty big news. Not only for the chance he ends up taking Leshoure's role but the increased role if Best misses time. This also can't be the news Best owners wanted to hear. Any chance of goal line carries has seemed to go out the window.

The previous Best handcuffs were "meh" to me, but Williams is interesting. I only own Best in one league, but I grabbed Williams the second I heard the news - I do think he gets a role there. Williams had 500+ total yards last year as an undrafted rookie, caught 39 passes, and is a definite bruiser. He's not garbage.

I see this as more capping Harrison's upside if Best goes down and Williams is actually effective with Detroit's OL. Harrison is still the second most explosive option on that team and will get touches if he keeps rolling out large gainers, but I could see another RB taking over at the GL.

Best is a different beast and you don't draft him for lots of opps at the one yard line. He's not 2009 Portis. So if I own Best this doesn't really scare me much, yet.

This has the potential to be a pretty significant story here. Lets assume that Best stays fairly healthy. If so Harrison won't see the field much. On the other hand his game is similar to the rookie rb who is out for the season.

No doubt Williams is worth a late rnd choice or a ww pickup.

I own Best and thought that the clear handcuff was Harrison. This muddies the picture and I don't like it. I like having a handcuff who is the clear option and not having to carry 2 handcuffs, roster space that I can't afford. For this reason this is somewhat bad news to Best owners IMO. I think Arizona would have been better off grabbing Williams than Taylor. Detroit already had plenty of backups in Harrison and Morris as well as Brown.

Keiland just isn't a very talented RB. People are also ignoring that he spent the entire offseason playing FB for the Skins. Doesn't mean he bulked up or anything, but it's not as if he won't be a bit rusty. His biggest value for the Skins last year was as a 3rd down back, because of his pass blocking skills and above average hands. Hence, the move to FB.

Unfortunately, 3rd down back seems to be the one job in DET that Beat has nailed down, no?

That's true. Just when Harrison affirmatively beats out Brown, the Lions go and add another tailback. I still think Harrison is the call, though, just because he has so much more upside than Morris or Williams. The latter two seem fairly pedestrian low RB2 types if they manage to win out and Best gets injured.

Here at Football guys Williams is listed as the Lions Fullback. That really shouldn't affect Harrison's handcuff value that much.
