Kennedy Center Honoree L.L. Cool J (1 Viewer)

He is the embodiment of an overly-educated white person's idea of a black rapper.

The Kennedy Center Honors nominating committee became 100% female just this past year and everybody knows that ladies love cool James.

You seem a little obsessed over race, gender, etc. Most comments of yours I come across (and it has been a lot less recently bc I don't go into the politics forum) seem to be touching one of these subjects.

Not trying to insult, but I don't see how "overly-educated white person's idea of a black rapper" makes it into this conversation. Anyways, just an observation.

Ask a member of the Kennedy Center board to name every rapper they've heard of and they're probably not getting past LL Cool J or Will Smith.

So what? Does this upset you? Would you be happier if it was Travis Scott?

How mad would you be if it was Post Malone?

I was unaware of the number of albums he has made, and of the number of his film roles. I also did not know of his T.V. role on NCIS.  I was aware of his lip sync show with Chrissy Teigan because, well, chrissy Teigan.

As for who the Kennedy Center honors, that's none of my affair.

I think it's funny that the Kennedy Center doesn't exactly have its finger on the pulse of what constitutes significant lifetime contributions to American culture. That's pretty much why this thread was created, right? So why crap on it?

Yeah, I'm not sure I understand the "why U mad?" posts.  People rag on the Academy Award nominees. They rag on every Rolling Stone list of the Top __________ Ever.  It doesn't bother me that these honors have moved beyond recognizing the best artists to include pop culture.  But people still like to think that it's a meritocratic.  This is the first hip hop honoree.  That seems wrong on just about any level.  Jay Z has both a better reputation and has made himself into a billionaire.  So, for that matter, has Dr. Dre.  I don't pretend to know the best hip hop artist.  I still think The Humpty Dance is contemporary hip hop.  But I know it when I don't see it.

Agreed.

LL Cool J isn't even the best former rapper who starred on a network police procedural show.

Definitely not the first hip hop artist I would have chosen, but he was an important figure in late 80s/early 90s hip hop and was very important for making it mainstream.

1. Don't forget how popular he was both among casual fans and rap critics.

2. It's a safe choice for the first hip-hop artist, slowly dipping the toes in the sands.

Kennedy Center always seems to go pretty vanilla.  He's going in with Gloria Estefan and Lionel Richie, and The Eagles and James Taylor went in last year.  That sounds about right.

I don't get the outrage.  Mr. Cool J was an important figure in the popularization of rap in the 80s and has gone on to transcend hip hop and reach mainstream success.  His style is pretty old school but he had the skills to back his bluster.

I'll let @mr. furley be the arbiter of this...
oh, man. that's a tough one.

LL was amazing at the outset but i really lost a lot of respect for him when he tried to go male model. the lip licking was just too over the top.

Ice-T was probably, in my mind, on the same level as LL but then he went and did the Body Count album and tried to steal Kidd Creole's look.

both legendary emcees & terrible actors.

slight nod to the guy who made Girls LGBNAF

Well I'm the type of guy that says, 'yo, why you illin me?' But you're the type of guy that says 'my lower back is killin' me'.

So.....
