Kevin Jones has 'amazing' open workout

MLive.com characterized free agent Kevin Jones' open workout as "amazing."

"I know the NFL will be shocked," said Dr. D.S. Ping, who leads Jones' rehab work. "He can go into camp right now. All he needs is football conditioning." Jones reportedly yelled out "Colletto," referring to new Lions OC Jim Colletto, before running his sprints. "I felt he was one of the reasons (for Jones' release)," said the unsigned tailback. "I don't have any personal feelings toward him, it's just some extra motivation." May. 29 - 6:05 pm et

I thought his workout was scheduled for 6/28? What was this?

Good for him.

Unfortunately he will have to wait and see if there are any injuries to a starter if he hopes to land a starting role. I have always thought he had the true talent if he could stay healthy and play for a team that utilized the run effectively

Not sure about that, only posting what I see.

Here's the full article, and there are YouTube clips at the end with him cutting back and forth, and also working on the knee on a squeaky hydraulic rig of some sort (it's explained in the article).

I'll admit, this has me a lot more intrigued by him. Obviously depends on where he ends up signing, but him coming back this year (and being ready from straight of training camp) and making an impact seems pretty likely based on this info.

Video here... doesn't look like a guy with a bum knee, that's for sure:

Just five months removed from reconstruction surgery on his right knee, former Detroit Lions running back Kevin Jones turned in an amazing workout before a couple of reporters on Thursday.

As seen in the video, Jones ran a couple of 40-yard sprints – uphill – and did some shuttle drills on grass. He did all of this after going through a rigorous training period.

"I know the NFL will be shocked,'' said Dr. D.S. Ping, who is spearheading Jones' rehab work. "He can go into (training) camp right now. All he needs is football conditioning. They told him it'd be a year and he's ready now.''

Before running his sprints, Jones yelled "Colletto'' as he got down in his three-point stance. Jones is referring to Jim Colletto, the Lions new offensive coordinator.

"I felt he was one of the reasons,'' Jones said. "Before I got let go, in the weeks leading up to that, I'd see on the Internet or (the Lions') website him saying they needed a guy who can make people miss, a back who can take it the distance. Well, I'm on the team and the starting running back so he's saying they need somebody else. I don't have any personal feelings toward him, it's just some extra motivation.''

Jones, who returned early from Lisfranc surgery on his left foot last season, was cut by the Lions in March.

"They were concerned about my foot and my knee being a factor at the same time,'' Jones said. "They said because of cap space they had to make some decisions. They said I had two significant injuries and it was the best decision to let me go.''

Jones, who was scheduled to make $2.4 million in 2008, will hold a workout for all NFL teams on June 28. Jones has already visited the New England Patriots and Tennessee Titans.

Still one of my favorite players, having watched his career since high school. I hope he can finally stay healthy and live up to his potential.

He'll catch on somewhere, he's a talented back. It's the staying healthy part that hasn't worked out.

Like the fit with AZ. Don't care or need to hear what they have on the roster currently, still think it's a good fit.

Watched the video... I missed the amazing part, though.

He's running against out of shape guys on a golf course and working out on a 70's work out machine. Is this what his life has come to? Is he auditioning for the next Rocky movie?

I was a little less than 'amazed' also. Dont see much point in putting out a video like this, with a workout that looks to be taking place on a golf course. Seems a little desperate.

Anybody can put a video together.

I'd like to see him put a "season" together.

Too many people are still living off the hype.

I always liked KJ, but I cant think of a spot for him to go to get the majority of the carries right now.

A team with Little depth would have to have a major injury in camp to get him signed.

Seattle and Houston are the only 2 I can think of. Cincy is also a possibility. Otherwise, I agree.

Cincy,Houston and Seattle all have like 3 backs or more already trying to get time. Really I think a team like SD or Indy might look at him incase LT or Addai got banged up. An option like this makes more sense.Really bad timing for K.Jones because of the good depth at RB in this years draft

I still think Arizona makes a lot of sense, with Edge getting up in years and nobody at all behind him. I will add that he would light it up if he were to sign with Denver. And I would not be surprised if he did.

I know they all have 3 backs trying to get time. Quantity, not quality.Seattle--KJ would easily start over Duckett, MoMo, and SHOULD win the job over JJHouston--KJ might split with Green early, but he should have no problem winning that starting job and would be a nice fit thereCincy--This is why I said maybe here. Rudi is probably entrenched as the starter now, but for how long? Also, if KJ were to impress, I could see him winning the job here.I could see him getting the majority of carries in any of those 3, although it's not likely. I'm just saying that I don't think that every RB situation on all 32 teams is locked down. Those teams I pointed out have plenty of quantity and virtually no quality.

Bungles down?
Aren't they deeper than most with Rudi, Perry and Irons? Seattle, NE, NO, are the teams that should be showing a lot of interest. It would also be very amusing if the Bears signed him.

Considering some people thought he was not going to be healthy enough to train until training camp I think it is pretty amazing.

I'm curious why no one is mentioning the Jets. I guess people think T. Jones is a lot better than I think he is...

I'm going to buy a Joe Weider hydraulic gym from Ebay and start my own NFL rehab center in my basement.

Seriously he looked pretty good, but he's still got a ways to go in his rehab process. Seems to me Jerry Rice made a similar recovery from a torn ACL?

Kevin Jones is coming off of an ACL and a serious foot injury.

13th round in HA3 a couple of weeks ago. I'll take it if he ever hopefully makes it back.

1. Why was this taking place on a golf course? (I didn't look at the video, just read it in the thread)

2. Did they replace any divots?

For everyone saying it wasn't amazing, what would you have considered amazing? Alot of running backs aren't changing direction as good as he is a year after the injury...he's only 5 months in.

As for teams he could end up on with a significant impact:

I know Cinci has Rudi, Perry, Irons, Watson---still, IF, he can enter the season healthy, he can have a dynamic impact on their offense. They really need that.

Tampa Bay comes to mind too. Graham, Dunn...I actually own Graham, but Jones could overtake he and Dunn if given the chance.

Chicago--Benson, Forte, it's not out of the realm of possibility Jones comes in and takes the job.

Green Bay--Grant was great last year down the stretch...for some reason I'm not 100% sure he's the real deal.

Houston--Ahman Green, Chris Brown...eh

Someone mentioned Seattle--seems iffy given they just paid Julius Jones, but I think if KJ was given the chance, he could outplay him.

so many players claim early comeback from acl. ALMOST never happens with any degree of fantasy reliability.

A late flyer in a keeper league for next year is the shark play here

As someone who has had ACL surgery I can say he looked amazing. No, he isn't ready for full NFL action yet, but he is a lot closer than most critics thought he would be. He will be contributing somewhere this year and his career is far from over. He has had a penchant for injuries but he has also shown a penchant for quick healing as well.

  You've restored my faith in the Shark Pool AZP. No, wait. Make that humanity. I won't ever understand the hate NFL players get for getting hurt. The fact that he's cutting like he was five months after ACL surgery is phenomenal.
