Pro Football Talk is reporting a league source says Kevin Smith is signing with Detroit.

If he does and Best is out what if anything would Kevin Smith value be?

He'll probably be better than he ever has been since they have a QB now that can make defenses pay for trying to stop the run. OL is better too. He's only 25.

Kevin Smith wasn't that good multiple injuries ago. I'm annoyed the Lions resigned him, he has zero upside. There has to be some other guy out there that can fall forward and might be decent.

Is he directing a movie for them?

On a more serious note, Detroit seems desperate to get another RB in there. Adjust your Best rankings accordingly. I like Maurice Morris as a half year starter though.

Maybe I'm just a stubborn Best owner, but I have a feeling this has more to do with the Lions needing more depth and not being happy with the backs behind Best rather than Best's health.

Kevin Smith was off to a great career until he got hurt. I wonder if he can handle the load or just another RBBC piece

You are definitely just a stubborn Best owner.

he knows the offense he has talent he is currently not hurt and he is better than morris or williams.

i like the upside all things considered.

IMHO, signing Leonard Davis was a bigger deal. The Lions have been aggressive this year going after the people they need. The Lions are making moves like they are interested in going all the way this year. Gotta love that.

It's called hedging your bet. They DO NOT know what will happen with Best this year. He may or may not play again this year. And if he does play again, he may sustain another concussion. It's not far fetched. But signing Smith doesn't definitively state the Best is done. And Smith isn't really a guy off the street. He played for them as recent as last year and he knows the offense. If Best doesn't play much the rest of the year he will probably serve as a backup to Morris and Williams.

Kevin Smith was not great.

He was good and (IMO) should be amidst a nice career as either an eh starter or a solid backup that can come in whenever needed including carry it for a game or three.

He got banged up pretty good in his brief career-a bad O-line will do that to ya.

This team is night and day different from the team he played for-even the very same guys seem to understand things the proper way now. Schwartz has been awesome.

I don't like Best, never have. We went round and round last year and into last summer. He looks awesome at getting a yard, that's all. In 2011, he did develop some and started to blossom. Smith(and tons of other backs) would easily be more productive than the runner Best was in 2010. None of this really matters though. Best was getting it done for a game or two. He was better-just like the other Lions. I figure Schwartz wants to see if Smith can be better, just like the other Lions, too.

There's nothing crazier than telling me a few years ago the Lions would be a top team. There's plenty of Lions playing wayyyy better than any of us thought. Let's see if Schwartz can wave his magic wand over Smith now.

Kevin Jones?
Jones was fine. He didn't get a ton of carries. Everyone seems to have this memory of Jones getting like 350-400 carries and only getting 700 yards. He probably got half that many carries. He was a good rook then they were always behind and didn't exactly put him in a spot to succeed, but there he was suddenly a very good receiving back for PPR.

I didn't understand why the watched him walk. That guy was definitely trying to make the best of a bad situation and I liked that. Even if not a star, why not keep a guy like that around?

IIRC he was "done" because Forte ran so well, there was no need for him.

Maybe Smith was equally good and they thought they only needed one RB.
