Thread title is sort of a tease. Kickers get little love around here and I am not real fond of them. One thing I do not agree with is posters that say "kicker - who cares". My reasoning is because while there is little difference between K#1 and K#12 in most years they can win for you and kill you in several games during the season. They kill you in those zero and 1 point games and steal something for you in those 15-18 point games.

Should I do away with the kicker? -- Probably not

How do I minimize the kicker so he does not decide so many games? -- I am thinking of increasing the scoring at all the offensive positions to reduce the kicker impact. thoughts??

I actually LIKE the kicker position.

I even have bonus points for field goals over 50 yrds.

BUT ...

I also believe that EVERY position that has the ability to score, should also have the ability to screw up.

I take -3 points for missed Field Goals (up to 45 yrds) and also -3 for blocked Field Goals. Just one way to add spice to the kicking game.

EDIT :

You may also want to decrease the points for Field Goals under ... say ... 25 yards. Only give 1 or 2 points for a "chip shot"

I like the kicker position too. It's a great place to play matchups, and in that regard I think it's underrated. Those big 15-18 point blowups during the season don't have to be so random, you have to look for them. It may be hard to predict, but that's what makes this game fun.

I don't see how it's any different than any other position. If you're going to devalue the kicker, you might as well just not use one. Some weeks your #2 WR goes nuts and wins the game for you - is there something wrong with that? I don't think so, and I think the same applies to kickers. Let them have their moment in the sun!
