Curious to know who you trust more when it comes to breaking down college players and the draft. I'm completely neutral at this point.

Please discuss strengths & weaknesses of both. I'm really not interested in their on air personalities. I want to know who tends to be more accurate and who's rankings & opinions you agree more with.

the lisp in a landslide.
 My girlfriend recognizes his lisp without looking at the TV. I guess I watch too much NFL Network and combine coverage.I am not sure who is more qualified or what not, but I like Mayock more.

I like both guys. They have really different thoughts and ideas and both bring a lot to the table.

People seem to be down on Kiper because of the mock drafts but few people get them all right. I like him. I like Mayock.

A few seasons ago I ripped Mayock but, slowly but surely, those people who I personally know care way more about draft prospecting than I do (e.g., Bloom, Cec, others on this forum) showed me the evidence that Mayock is actually really quite good. Last year I pretty much did a 180 on the guy and now, thus far this season, have been far more interested in what he has to say than Kiper. I still think it's way too easy to pick on Kiper; he works hard to his job. But I think whereas he was an island unto himself for years, he has to step up his game in the face of ever growing, credible competition.

Suprised Mayock is winning quite handedly. I also prefer Mayock and would throw Ron Jaworski in the mix. Jaws knows breaking down the tape and is quite good.

I don't have any concrete examples, but I find Kiper can be a bit out there on some of his sleepers. Mayock is more consistent, and seems more intune with current opinions and trends.

All I know is that Mel Kiper's history is a lot worse... He said Ryan Leaf was a "sure thing" over Peyton Manning.Robert Gallery and Leonard Davis were "can't miss" draft picks.Mike Williams was the best overall player in the draft... Yeah, the former WR Mike Williams. May he R.I.P.Mayock easily... easily. He actually describes players mechanics in detail (QBs hips --- Very Important, among many other things). Kiper is done, has been a dead fish, and is just a suit making too much money for what he actually does.

Old school respect for Mel. He's the godfather of all draft coverage/emphasis. :moneybag:

Praise Mayock all you want but don't bash Mel...or I'll do absolutely nothing about it.

Seems to be a lot of love for Mayock here. The poll started out 33% Mel/ 66% Mike. At the time of this post it is closer to 40% Mel/ 60% Mike.

I'd like to hear from some of those voting Mel. So far the only credit he is getting is for being the first guy to do it.

Some folks don't get the NFL Network... Maybe that could be the cause?

I'm not sure if Kiper is any worse than Mayock. But it has gotten to the point that it feels like Kiper is more selling a product than he is doing player scouting. I often strongly suspect the reason that his board moves around is so that he has something new to say to make him relevant. It makes me distrust his board at any given moment because it feels like he's probably got some guys in there just because he needed to make a change to have something to say.

What did Mayock say?

I voted Mayock because he has a more objective view and doesn't have an ego like Kiper does. Kiper tends to get a "gut feeling" on a guy and won't back down from his initial evaluation, whereas Mayock will say something and say that he is changing his mind one way or the other on someone.

I'll take Mayock over Kiper in a heartbeat, but both pale in comparison to the late Joel Buchsbaum (may he RIP), who was the best draft analyst I've ever had the pleasure of reading. His ability to assess how a player's skill would translate to the NFL was the best I've ever seen.

This is no rip on Kiper, who is actually a super nice guy. I once called to order his book about 10 years ago. He answered the phone himself, thanked my for calling, and talked to me about the Cowboys for about 15 minutes. I just think Mayock is more astute.

What did Mayock say?
Mayock had Aaron Rodgers going to Green Bay.Mayock also made the call on Buffalo taking Whitner 8th overall a couple of years ago. A pick that Kiper was baffled by. Look how it turned out so far.

The picks aren't everything either.

In Vince Young's case, he explained the thought process which led to Tennessee taking Young (another good pick though, he was dead on) while Kiper tried to explain the whole Norm Chow-USC connection and how he was baffled. Mayock easily out-analyzes Kiper come draft day... Period.

Interesting viewpoint. :goodposting:

I believe there are teams that would actually hire Mayock as a personnel guy......rumored to be headed to the Raiders front office last year.......never heard anything about teams' interest in Kiper........not that he's not any good, he's actually very good, but I think Kiper is more of a showman and I'm not so sure he evaluates certain positions using the most relevant attributes.......like QBs - I'll never trust his QB rankings....but he let me just say, he wasn't the only guy pushing Leaf over Manning....
