Anything to break the Giants and Jets fans' stranglehold on this event would be great in my opinion.

BTW, I tried the search function, but I got the message about flood control several times.

L.A. wants to host NFL draft

Posted: Friday May 02, 2008 07:06AM ET

Even though the NFL hasn't played a game in Los Angeles in almost 14 years, there's a chance the city could land one of pro football's marquee events. The league is considering moving the NFL draft from New York beginning next year, and AEG has had preliminary discussions with the NFL about holding the draft at Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in 2009. The NFL's two-year contract with Radio City Music Hall has expired. Asked recently whether the league was considering moving the draft from New York, where it has been held since 1965, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said, "Yes. There seems to be a great deal of interest from various cities to do it. We think Radio City has been terrific, and obviously being in the media capital is a terrific thing for us, but it is something that we continue to evaluate, and we haven't come to any conclusion on it. . . . "

Nice, all the LA fans can show up after the 5th pick, and leave before the 7th pick.

I understand that NYC is the media capital, but can anyone explain what specific benefit this has for the NFL draft? Most people who watch the draft would do so regardless of where it was held.

Let the cities that are never allowed to get a Super Bowl host the draft. Seems fair to me, sorry LA.

Why would a city who can't even host a NFL franchise steal the draft from the largest sports market in the world.

L.A., get back to us when you have a NFL team.

kk, thanks

This would probably be the exception to my rule/thought process in that you should have a NFL team in your city to be able to host the draft. It's my understanding that Vegas isn't allowed to have a team, so you can't count that against them.

Radio City Music Hall is owned by Cablevision, one of the major cable providers not carrying the NFL Network.
Good catch - and it wouldn't be the first or 50th time the League played hardball.

Having the high profile rookies in town for the draft increases the amount of exposure the NFL can get from all the shows produced in New York like Good Morning America, The Today Show, etc. Not that they can't fly them in to do those shows at other times, but that's about the only reason I can come up with.I'm in favor of having the draft rotate around the league's cities. I think it would be great to see a different team's fans in large numbers each year.

Yeah, good point. I don't watch those lousy shows though, so I didn't consider that aspect. Seems everyone who cares though will go to wherever the rookies are: New York, LA or even Des Moines.

NFLN is here. tons of agents. Celebs. (the last one is not a good reason but don't think it isn't a factor. NY has them but LA celebs go looking for press in a way the NY folk down't - they could actually get them to show up I bet.) Studio money (they'd pay to be in the building). On one level I agree - why LA? I would rather see it be a reward for the smaller franchises and cold-weather places that will probably never see a super bowl. But on the other hand - maybe the Draft would be just the momentum to get the various politicians to stop grandstanding the next time we have a shot at a team and get the heck outta the way.Colosseum Commission, I'm looking at you....

It would be a short drive for Raiders fans who are undoubtedly gonna be drafting top 5 every year.
Shorter than you think - a ton of them fly up for the games in OAK fro mLA each weekend anyway - it'd be right around the corner.Would you trade Giant and Jets fans for Raider faithful?Playing with fire I say - better the devil you know and all that....... :moneybag:

rotate like the SuperBowl will probably be the outcome. Cities will bid and the big winner ($) will of course be the 32 owners

There is absolutely NO way that a city without an NFL team should be hosting the NFL draft. That is extremely unfair to the cities that have a team.

It won't matter- it will become the circus that is the SuperBowl where the seats will be unaffordable and promised to a select few corporate season ticket holders within the awarded city. If it goes on the road- you won't be able to afford it in your own city anyway. Television here we come...

Yet it's fine for you that anyone not living in NY has to fly there and pay NY prices for a hotel room just to see the draft for "free".

Lets not go overboard here. The draft really only appeals to a select group of the diehards. It won't approach Super Bowl levels by any means. I'd pay $20-$30 to go to the draft in my hometown and that's probably excessive for most folks. There's only really so much you can "see" at the draft. I'm thinking they could hold it in NBA/NHL type arenas and get about 10-15,000 in the house for the 1st round. The thing is most people are just sick of seeing Jets and Giants fans have all the fun. Goodell seems like a progressive enough guy to get this show on the road. Hope there's an announcement soon.,

It should come out West and stay out West...is there anything more annoying than the Jets fans and Giants fans...I mean seriously.

I hate to break it to you, slick, but NYC doesn't have a football team. The draft should be in East Rutherford.

I second Vegas....as a homage to the gambling that made the sport as popular as it is.
I'm starting to come around on this Vegas thing. Is there any bigger gamble for an NFL team besides giving a fat contract to some unproven kid? The symbolism works really well.

Agreed...with the lone exception of Vegas, the one major city that will never be allowed a team.

ESPN will be rooting for L.A. next year so they can show off there new digs at the Kodia Theater. It holds 7000 people and they plan to have an NFL Experience type thing like they do for Super Bowls and the X Games.

ESPN has something going at the Kodak?I had no idea. You would be hard pressed to do an NFL experience thing like at Super Bowls at/near the Kodak - there isn't any room. You'd have to put it somewhere else.

My bad...not the Kodak..or the Kodia.....the Nokia Theater(apparently I put them both together). Its the new building across from the Staples Center downtown. ESPN is setting up shop ther for their West Coast feed. They are not going to be exclusive to Bristol.

Well with Disney in Burbank - it makes sense for the Mothership to call them home.Yeah, the Nokia makes more sense. Although you may be onto somethign with the whole Kodia thing - we should copyright it.
