Ladell Betts (1 Viewer)

Was looking over my rosters and came across Ladell Betts and I was wondering what his current and future value might be?

I picked him up last year as insurance for Portis but Portis had a great year and now is being hyped for this year. I also felt that Betts could carry the load if Portis went down or Portis' contract became such that Wash would release him. Also thought Betts may be let go or traded and could have some value. Now it doesnt look that way. Further complicating is the fact that Betts is 2 years older then Portis despite being in the same draft. So its not like you can draft the younger back for the future.

Betts

Height: 5-11 Weight: 223

Born: Aug 27, 1979

Draft: 2002 - 2nd round (24th pick) by the Washington Redskins

Portis

Height: 5-11 Weight: 223

Born: Sep 1, 1981

Draft: 2002 - 2nd round (19th pick) by the Denver Broncos

What are your thoughts on Betts' future? Strictly a backup to Portis and an injury handcuff? or will he get a shot be the lead back (will he or portis be on a different team this year or next with a shot to start since he isnt more talented the portis)

??

Betts is a solid handcuff to Portis but nothing more. He has been in the league long enough that the chances of him becoming a viable long term starter for another team are remote.

even in the best case scenario of Betts getting a starting gig next year he'll be 30 and hold very little value due to that.

his only value is as a Portis handcuff IMO.

Mild value to Portis owners. He will never be a starter with another team, and will only get a shot if Portis goes down.

I agree with basically what others have said already. Betts greatest value is to those who own Portis. Seeing that is you already, there is really no need to even try and shop him.

Thats what I was thinking too. However its a 7 player keeper league with contract lengths so I either have to drop him into the FA draft or sign him for a few years along with Portis. After last year his value is low, the year before I would have kept him.

I like Betts more than most for 2008. He was a top 10 RB not long ago. Also, Portis leading the league in carries last year, and his high career carry count, could give Betts more opportunity.

Like I said at the time, I considered his 2006 season a fluke as far as his YPC goes. I thought he just got hot at the end of 2006 and it skewed his stats. He came back to reality last year but he does hold value as a guy to stash if you think Portis will get banged up (far from a remote possibility I'll admit) since he'll be the guy to carry the load again.

2006 showed me he was capable. Is Portis a better RB? sure. But, as far as depth RBs go, Betts has a ton of upside for a guy with lower value.

He was a FA and I really didn't understand why he resigned. If nothing else, he could have seen a reasonable pay day from another team. I don't know his contract with D.C. but i'd imagine he could have gotten more money from another team...

Edit:

I think betts is probably a top 5 backup and that portis is generally under rated. Which is a great combo for fantasy. You can get Portis at value, and if you cuff him with Betts you've pretty much locked up dependable output for 16 weeks. (and obviously I'm a Portis/Betts owner ...)

:goodposting: Every Portis owner should have him, but that's about it.

Doubtful that he is worth keeping in your top 7 but he is a guy to target as a cuff during the redraft.

I inherited a bad dynasty team, and I've got Betts. My QB's are getting older and I'm trying to move Betts to the Portis owner for Aaron Rodgers (who also has Palmer, Cutler and Rivers).I like the upside of Rodgers over Betts' limited value for me.

Good luck with that. I am a Portis owner in 6/10 dynasties and no way I move a potential franchise QB for a cuff.

I don't want to make this an ACF thread, but when he's only got the 1.07 pick and 3 franchise QB's on his roster and little to no depth behind Portis (Garrett Wolfe, Dayne, F. Jackson, Ahman Green and Davenport), I'm hoping that he values that handcuff to his only viable RB more than an unproven QB who'll never sniff his starting lineup.

That's still a huge hit in value. Without knowing much about your league, you're probably going to have better luck getting a draft pick - if you're rebuilding, why not package something and trade up into that 1.07 spot? IMHO that's the best use of a guy like Betts in trade.

The interesting thing is how Portis is considered smallish and likely to breakdown while Betts is considered a more powerful back. That being said. Betts is the new Buckhalter. Handcuff is all he's worth at this point.
