*Laker Talk 2014-15* O-fer for Okafor (1 Viewer)

Don't think there's much argument to make that it's not possible Randle becomes a franchise PF. Fitting title thread since it is now looking like Okafor is coming. I'd prefer Towns, as he is a rim protector who can hit free throws and jumpers. He would cover up Randle's weakness in protecting the rim. I do think Okafor would fit well with Randle on the offensive end, where Randle prefers to operate from the high post, face up and drive to the basket while Okafor likes it down low.

Biggest downside to getting Cousins, Butler AND Wade this year is it will be more difficult to max extend Kobe and sign Durant next year.

Durant willing to take a discount with all the foot issues?

Not even worth thinking about. I don't see any of those things happening, let alone all of them. Probably won't get Cousins, Butler or Wade, Kobe isn't getting any more max extensions and Durant likely isn't coming either.

Yeah, I guess I need to start using some sarcasm smilies or something. Or I could stop posting / using twitter after drinking, but that's no fun.

What could Randle fetch draft pick-wise in this draft?

Wouldn't mind teaming Okafor with Cauley-Stein. Much better then Randle and Okafor pairing.

WCS is going to be a steal.

I'm leaning toward D'Angelo Russell now. I wouldn't be disappointed with Jahlil Okafor but I just think factoring in the way the NBA is now and the fit with Randle and Okafor, I'd go Russell. He can do it all at the guard position. He's a PG, but can also be deadly as a spot of shooter which is a great fit next to Kobe. He and Clarkson are both hybrids with similar size, so that future pairing would be very exciting.

If they could somehow convince Deandre Jordan to come over to the other dressing room or Mitch can work his magic and get Marc Gasol here.

Russell

Clarkson

Kobe

Randle

Jordan

Then we have room for two max spots in 2016. In the end I trust Mitch will go in the right direction.

I really wish FA was before the draft.

The more I hear the more I think Russell should be the pick if they can't work a deal for Cousins. The lack of D, poor free throw shooting and reports of questionable desire to play basketball make me really :oldunsure: about Okafur. A problem I have with drafting Russell, from an overall roster perspective, is that I think Westbrook is the only big name free agent coming available in the next couple of years that would be likely to sign with the Lakers, and (assuming Russell works out) the team probably doesn't work with a Westbrook + Russell backcourt.

Pretty happy with the draft overall for the Lakers.

I was surprised Mitch didn't play it "safe" with Okafor - it was nice to see them swing for the fences for a potential superstar in Russell. Hopefully taking Russell keeps the Lakers from going after Rondo, and I'm not a Dragic for a max deal guy either.

Best case scenario would be if they can get one of the top bigs now - Gasol ( not likely), Aldridge, Jordan, then Love. A younger vet wing like Danny Green would also be great, but Lakers probably don't have enough for both.

Nance was a surprise pick at 27, but I really liked the Anthony Brown pick at 34. The Nance pick probably would have seemed better if he went 34 and Brown went 27, so I guess I'm just picking nits.

If I were Mitch, I would have picked:

2 - Russell

27 - RJ Hunter

34 - Rakeem Christmas

Can't complain though, Lakers got a couple great shooters and some talent to hopefully build around. At least until they get traded for Boogie.

Nice, they got a summer league commitment for Robert Upshaw too. Solid low-risk, high-upside gamble there. He was fairly high on some draft lists but went undrafted with his off court stuff.

Yes the best thing about Russell pick is it ends the Rondo nonsense.

Russell

Clarkson

Kobe

Randle

And hopefully Aldridge.

Couple of atrocious years. Excited to get Randle and Russell out of it with tons of cap space. Way you do it.

I was hearing good things about his potential also. Sounded like his main problem was weed.

I'm still :oldunsure: about the Nance pick. I was thinking McCullough or Looney there. I guess they felt like they needed a younger, cheaper Wes Johnson.

Brown is a nice gamble. They need someone who can hit an open 3. Hopefully this ends the Ryan Kelly thing too - that guy sucks.

Updated depth chart:

PG: D'Angelo Russell, Lou Williams

SG: Jordan Clarkson, Jabari Brown

SF: Kobe Bryant, Nick Young, Anthony Brown

PF: Julius Randle, Brandon Bass, Ryan Kelly, Larry Nance

C: Roy Hibbert, Tarik Black, Robert Sacre, Robert Upshaw

Possibly trying to get rid of Young, Kelly, and/or Sacre.

Hopefully Upshaw keeps his head straight and plays well in Summer League.

We'll see what happens with a sign and trade with Lin and the Mavs, hopefully get a asset there.

Hopefully Mitch is active looking for any trades that could help for the future. Develop the young guys and hopefully Russell and Randle reach their potential. Kobe stays healthy comes back cheaper next year and we try again in FA. Hibbert is basically a free lottery ticket after not getting anybody in FA, good gamble. He's been training in LA, some with Kareem, hopefully a change of scenery does him good.

Looking forward to Summer League starting Friday. Russell, Clarkson, Randle, Upshaw, Black, Nance and Brown x2.

That is definitely a playoff team in the East. Just not enough in the West. I think Russell is going to be a star.

I like the way Mitch saved things after a disastrous start. Hibbert was a great pick-up. Gives the team the defensive anchor they've been sorely lacking. Has to help the young guys having him out there on D. Lou Will is a good fit with the Russell/Clarkson backcourt. They have good size to cover for Lou when he's in there. Lou was deadly from the corner 3 last year. Maybe Russell/Clarkson can get him more of those shots. I also like the pick-up of Bass. Good veteran presence for the young guys. No nonsense, workmanlike approach. Plays everyday. Defensive versatility.
