Laptop for Video Editing (and other stuff) Help? (1 Viewer)

Hey guys,

Sorry I'm way out of touch on computers nowadays, was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. Seems like our old laptop isn't cutting it anymore and we're looking to upgrade to a new one, Don't want to get more than we need and I think the most "intense" programs we'd run would be Minecraft for my son...

  • CPU: Intel Core i3 or AMD Athlon II (K10) 2.8 GHz
  • RAM: 4GB
  • GPU: GeForce 2xx Series or AMD Radeon HD 5xxx Series (Excluding Integrated Chipsets) with OpenGL 3.3
  • HDD: 1GB
  • Latest release of Java 7 from java.com
Other programs would just be office apps, photo / video editing, regular family stuff, etc.

Any suggestions for the best place to look for laptops / deals now?

Even better, any specific suggestions for a particular model?

Looking for something similar. Current laptop is consumed by Minecraft and they are constantly complaining that it lags.

Minecraft is a very resource heavy game despite it's 90s graphics. Your going to want to get a gaming rig no matter the brand if you don't want lag. Gaming laptops tend to be very expensive to the point where I'd start looking at desktops.

Before this devolves into desktop vs. laptop, if what you truly want is a laptop, beware that you'll pay for the performance you seek.

What are the specs on your current laptop? Would be a good starting point to help you shop around for one that "lags" less.

Not sure, but Minecraft doesn't even run on it, he plays on his Kindle Fire but doesn't like the version.

Desktop is not an option, not having him hole up in a different room to play.

Worst case, I buy an old XBox 360 so they can at least play splitscreen in the living room.

Used coupon USPY4CUS219 to bring it down to $609.

For the price I think it's a great selection. Used this list as a reference.

(BTW, I had to use Google to search for this thread, board search doesn't find any threads for minecraft even with another one on the first page)

Ok, so when I originally posted this I got sick of looking at computer options like I normally do and ended up just buying a refurb xbox 360 so the kids could play Minecraft. Then our older laptop took a crap and now the wife and kids are all on me about getting a new one. I started looking into Macbooks but none of us want to spend $1500-$2000+ for the specs we'd want.

I searched around to find one that could handle editing photo and video (just had a bunch of home movies converted to DVD) as well as other home office and kid gaming needs over the next couple of years. The thing that pisses me off the most about these is taht they seem to be obsolete or at least not working well about 6 months after I spend a grand on them.

Anyway, was looking at this one, let me know what you think of this model and if you have any better suggestions...

Looks pretty damn good. Asus is pretty reliable. Specs look great for what you need.

 Not to push a macbook, but they tend to last awhile and according to your link you're already spending $1300. Whats an extra $300 if it lasts an extra 2-3 years?

Big fan of ASUS, they have through three laptops/tablets not let me down yet, the whole family has one now.

Incluing my wife who got onewhen her Macbook air crashed the HD and could not be repaired (2 years old)
