Laptop /Tablet Suggestions for College Student (1 Viewer)

Psychopav

Help us, Joebi-Wan Brynobi, you're our only ho
My first born is being ready to head off to college (out of state :'( ). She has a Lenovo laptop that is fast and strong but heavy. We are going to hand it down to her brother because she'd like to replace it with something much more portable (4lbs or lighter . Although I am a fbg, she is not, so it also needs to be affordable (< $250 or so ).

It can be refurb, used, or open box.

It needs to be able to do all her classwork type stuff so needs to be able to do Ms Office.  She's going to be an early childhood teacher (at this point that's the plan, anyway, so it won't have to be able to do heavy duty calculation etc. Just project work and documents.

She 's no gamer, so for entertainment really just needs internet, email, and streaming video (Netflix and the like).

A camera would probably be good but not required (although they all come with one now don't they?).

Anyone have any suggestions?

Are all the technology savvy types political types too? Am I a victim of the subforum? :o

Just look on NewEgg for some refurbs/open box.  There are some cheap Chromebooks out there too that should fit the bill.

If you’re after a mid-size notebook at an affordable price, it’s hard to go wrong with the Chuwi LapBook 14.1. It offers a 1920x1080 IPS display, which is somewhat of a rare find in this segment of 1366x768 TN laptops. It’s based on Intel’s Apollo Lake Celeron N3450, which is four Atom Goldmont cores that can go up to 2.2 GHz. 4 GB of Dual-Channel RAM coupled with 64 GB of eMMC storage make this a surprisingly capable notebook for the price, and although it’s plastic, the material has a great texture to it. This is one of my favorite notebooks of 2017 so far, and it sells for $270 USD.

I know you said $250 but that is pretty low for any decent laptop.  I'd recommend a new or slightly used Macbook Air.  If you keep an eye out for deals, you can find a brand new one for around $750, and I'm sure you can find some good used ones on eBay in the $500 range.  It seems like a high price, but I can pretty much guarantee it will last for 4+ years.  My daughter is starting her senior year at college this year, and hers is still going strong.  I expect it to last her through grad school - 2 more years at least.  Plus there's the fact that by my observation, a good 75-80% of college students use Macs.

Best Buy is always running big discounts on Macs for college students.  That's where we bought ours.  Also check for laptop deals through your daughter's university.
