LaptopGuys: Startup Fail... (1 Viewer)

7 year old Sony Vaio running Win7 Home Premium that was performing wonderfully... until it didn't.

Startup took unusually long and eventually went to the Windows Error Recovery menu. I'm no geek, but went through the Startup Repair, System Restore(attempted to 3 points, now none available), unplug-remove battery-replace battery gig, etc to no avail. I'm thinking Windows updates is the culprit with an unusually large number recently.

I've had hard drives fail, and been faced with blue screens of death, but this? Of course, I haven't backed things up as recently as I would have liked and am hoping to salvage files. Would really like to get this baby up and running again- I have a couple of programs on there that can't be replaced. If I have to restore to factory settings after retrieving files, then so be it. It was running like a top...

"if restore point is not listed then your options within the recovery tools diminish." My restore points are gone.

You may have to use a boot cd to recover your files then.  Maybe take it somewhere for file recovery if you cannot do it yourself then?

Thanks. I'm holding out hope that there is a workaround for getting through the Startup Failure itself. I found one, but a bunch of the post had been redacted by a Microsoft admin because the program used was "illegal."

Just reinstall windows.
