Leading with the head when tackling...... (1 Viewer)

I was watching NFL total access and was intrigued to here that the refs will be penalizing players for leading with their head when tackling.

The NFL wants to protect their players but is this going to far??? How the heck are you supposed to tackle? Maybe I misunderstood what was being said; did anyone else take see this on NFL access? If so am I misunderstanding what was being said.

I've noticed some cornerbacks and smaller players are willing to dive head first into a persons body. I believe thats what this would be referring to.

The NFL is trying to prevent serious neck and spinal cord injuries. Indirectly, they are also protecting the individual teams' investments. What's not to like?

This to protect the tackler as much, if not more than the ball carrier. As for, "how are you supposed to tackle", with your head up. See the target.

With bigger/faster players I think it's necessary to crack down on spearing.

Kids are going to start dying and/or sustain paralytic injuries if it isn't curtailed.

It may soften the game up, but if it saves lives or if it prevents paralysis that's fine by me. A lot of these guys have families just like you and me.

You can lead with the part of your head that is your face, just not the top of your helmet.

Right. You're taught since Pop Warner to stick your face mask in the guys chest, wrap and drive...tackling 101.
