League Contraction from 14 to 12. How to do it? (1 Viewer)

I am in a dynasty league that has been around for 15 years. 33 man rosters, IDP 8 off starters/6 def. We are pretty sure we are going to lose a couple of owners here this offseason. Both of the teams have decent starters, but lack some depth and are weak on the IDP side. For a number of reasons we are considering contracting the league to 12 teams. Trick is how to do it. I am thinking the remaining 12 teams each get to protect 12-20 players each and all the rest are throw in with all the players from the other two teams. Snake draft from there.

Any other ideas or comments on holes in this thinking? Thanks in advance

auction draft like a 12-team start-up for their assets. Assign a $100 budget or whatever sum works for ya. Divvy up the assets. I agree with trimming rosters of remaining teams to fatten the draft.

good way to refresh the competitive balance of the league too. I’d say let everyone keep 1/2 their roster,. IDP means deeper teams, & I’m sure folks will kee top IDP options too.

I might also expand IDP starting requirements from 6 to 7 or 8 with the influx of talent, as well as, maybe add a flex spot for the same reason.

Refreshing the balance was what we were hoping would revitalize the league a bit. I like the auction idea also.

Contraction should be easy (it's expansion that's hard). Just make all of the players on the eliminated teams into free agents and have a draft. Maybe combine it with your rookie draft, make it snake, and add more rounds. Or do it as a separate draft, snake or auction.

No need to have the other teams lose any players.

You could consider expanding rosters or starting lineups, to try to keep the total number of rostered players (or the total number of starting players each week) closer to what it was.

Yes that would work and we need to decide on adjusting roster size, and starting line ups. In a vacuum the thought was to let everyone keep their core and redraft 12-20. Incorporate the defunct teams players but also anyone that other teams would drop to pick up the new guys, and avoid a WW run for some of the weaker teams. That way everyone is out there from the beginning. If we redraft 10-20 rounds. No one is forced to drop an top gun, and you will be able to pick that guy back up, or at least a similar guy.

I like the idea of auctioning off picks. I can decide to spend everything to get the first pick or try to get 3 or 4 at the end of the 1st round.

You could keep enforce the standard roster size limit during the draft, which means that in order to draft someone you have to drop someone first (unless your roster wasn't full yet). Then those players are immediately draft eligible and can get snapped up by the teams with less depth. Also teams can trade those bottom-of-the-roster guys for picks instead of dropping them.

I guess it depends on whether your leaguemates are more in the mood of wanting to get a somewhat fresh start vs. wanting the work they put into building their roster to keep mattering.

I agree with ZWK. Its easier to reduce teams than to add them.

If you want to keep similar values of players to the 14 team league, then add flex starting positions so that teams are still starting the same number of players each week, just on two fewer teams aside from the QB or TE position if you only start one of those.

If the goal is to freshen up the league, then try doing auction or having some teams drop players to make the draft or auction more interesting.
