It should be NL only - ten team mixed would be All Star teams and not learning to play the game correctlyMost NL leagues are 11/12/13 so you will have more players in the free agent pile....fine for newbies22 active is just slightly strange - my guess is only 1 catcher which again is fine for newbies.25 total would give you three reserves which is fine
The league I played in was just like what your friend set up (it was on ESPN). I did not mind the deep player pool, but I'm hardly an affcionado.
If you are playing on ESPN, keep in mind that, unlike many sites, they have no hitter limits. That puts a premium on multiple position players and also makes it more important to keep up with rain-outs, days off, etc.
With 22 starting spots, 10 team NL only could get a little tight. The NL has 16x8 = 128 regular lineup positions, so if there's 13 or 14 hitting spots to fill for 10 teams, you're getting into using utility men and platoon players. I don't think you need to go that deep for a beginner league.
There's nothing wrong with a 10 team mixed league. In fact, having some regulars to pick from in the FA pool will probably encourage more activity among new players.
