Was following along in the recently viewed movie thread and a couple of posters were extolling the virtues of the movie San Andreas.  That got me thinking about some of the disaster movies that have come out recently and also reminded me of why these movies get made in the first place.

Some of them understood exactly what they were meant to be, which is silly, stupidy science, eye rolling humdingers with high entertainment value.  Where some go wrong, however, is trying to hard to be serious minded and to be a 'message' movie that gets all preachy and sappy.  Others just get it wrong all over including with the effects and that is a cardinal sin with these films.

Anyway, my choice for least enjoyable was Day After Tomorrow.  Some climate change schlockfest that has zero humor and presents it's case as if this stuff really could happen.  The only cool part(see what I did there) was the insta-freeze of the chopper crew.  Everything else was dull, stupid-stupid and boring.

My favorite is a tie between The Core and 2012.  Both of these movies were so outrageous in thought and execution that they were actually fun to watch.  I've rewatched both at least as few times.  If I'm flicking around the dial on a Sunday afternoon with nothing better to do and I land on one of these two movies I usually watch until the end.  Yeah, I'm a sucker but what do I care, at least I'm entertained.  They hit the right note of fun-stupid pseudoscience with dialogue meant to be shared with a wink to the audience and actors who can pull off the archetypes they portray.   Sit back, eat your popcorn, drink your beer and turn off your brain, it'll be alright.

I guess I should specify "least enjoyable movie regarding natural disasters" and not a movie that is so bad that it in itself is a complete disaster.  This means that your opinion, Dan, is in actuality wrong.

Sure, why not?  Not sure why you want to go down that path right now but it's your message board too.  Have at it.

Don't all of these movies fit both definitions?

I feel sorry for those of you that cannot enjoy some good disaster pron, no matter how badly they turn out.  I celebrate the entire catalog of disaster movies.

Went with " The Day After Tomorrow "

Once the storms are finished freezing the Earth you are better off just turning it off.

You feel sorry for me because I don't choose to spend 90 minutes or more on pure and utter garbage?  That's an odd stance to take.

I feel sorry for people who will shell out money and precious time on cash grabs that can't get above 40% on Rotten Tomatoes.   I feel sorry that you don't have anything better to do with your time or money, like light the money on fire and watch it burn.

Break it up fellas, this is a peaceable joint and we don't want any unnecessary commotion around here.  Capiche?

Other's not an option but I'm picking it anyway. The Happening was by far M. Night Shamalamadingdong's most disappointing film.

How is Armageddon not on this list? It was far worse than Deep Impact was.
Interesting take, Kal, as I intentionally left Armageddon off the list cuz I view it as a fan favorite of the genre.  No reason to put it up against the rest of the dreck.  And I do disagree with you on how it fares against Deep Impact.

Deep Impact to me is a very close second place in the least favorite category.  Bad effects, terrible dialogue, bad acting(Tea Leona is gawd awful) and the whole thought process within the universe of that movie made absolutely no sense.  A scene that sticks out is one where as the clock is ticking toward impact, and I'm talking hours before certain destruction of the entire planet, Leona leaves her office and hails a cab and what do you know?  A cab pulls up.  As to why a cabbie is out trying to make fares instead of home with family or at a bar getting drunk with impending doom right around the corner left me agape with incredulousness.  Terrible plotting.   That and the whole lottery idea where President Freeman tells everyone who isn't picked to remain calm while the chosen are whisked away to safety made me laugh my ### off.  I mean there is stupid and then there is stupid.  This movie was stupid-stupid.

Probly 2012, I dont take any enjoyment out of seeing millions and millions of people die, no matter how good the CGI is doing it.

Hey look at that hospital collapse as John Cusick drives by, there were probly newborns in there, how exciting.

You do realize it is a fictional movie, right?  No actual people were harmed in the making of that film and it depicts no actual crisis where the Earth's crust suddenly shifted so that the Himalayas are where New York was and vice versa.

I appreciate you pointing out that it wasnt a documentary.

Scientifically, Armageddon couldn't have happened, whereas Deep Impact was more plausible. There is no way that an exploding asteroid would be visible from the entire planet at once, nuking an asteroid probably wouldn't work anyway, and would likely make the situation worse, because you'd now likely have two radioactive asteroid chunks heading towards the planet. Not to mention there's no sound in space.

While I'm on the subject of disaster movies, while the effects of Twister were groundbreaking at the time, the research department should have been fired. There is no way that two people can anchor themselves to a metal pipe in an F5 (now EF5) tornado and not get ripped apart. The average terminal velocity of a human is about 130 mph. At the old F5 scale, the lowest windspeed is twice that. The characters are apparently able to get close to the actual funnels, whereas in reality, the windspeed of a tornado extends out a considerable distance.
