UPDATE - NOT Dead: https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...nouncement-of-lem-barneys-death-was-incorrect

I have some sad news for longtime Detroit Lions fans. Legendary defensive back Lem Barney has passed away at age 80. He was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1967. He was a 2-time first-team All-Pro. He made 7 trips to the Pro Bowl. He holds the record for most interceptions returned for touchdowns by a rookie with 7. He had 56 interceptions in his career. He went into the Hall of Fame in 1992. If anyone has any memories they'd like to share of Lem Barney, please feel free to do so.

What a bummer, one of my favorite Lions of all time, one hell of a DB. Times were much different for athletes back in the 60's, they worked side jobs, appeared at banquets and participated in local sporting games. The Lions appeared at our local high school for some type of charity basketball game and my Dad took me and my brothers to see it.

Back then our city was a lily white suburb and I did not have much exposure any black people, you will see why I bring this up. After the game the Lions went swimming in the high school pool, also in those days it was not that unheard of to swim without bathing suits. Weird fact, in middle school we had a few days of gym class we had to swim without suits, my kids still don't believe that story. Anyhow, we get home and my Mom asked me how the game was, I blurted out I saw Lem Barneys Doodo. For some reason that is what we called a guys member, the size of Lem must have made quite an impression with me.
