Lets Talk Maroney/Morris (1 Viewer)

Does everyone think week 1 is a sign of things to come and that Sammy Morris is going to operate in a similar role to Corey Dillon last season when both he and Maroney were healthy? (somewhere around but below 50% of the carries?)

Or do you think week 1 was an abberation due to the Pats having a significant lead and an 11 carry game will be Sammy's upside and not his norm?

With the surgery that Maroney went through combined that he's never been a heavy-handed full-time RB, I'm sure the Pats want to keep him 'fresh'. The guy is a real talent but in order to fully exploit him at his best, Bellicheat will add a complimentary RB to ease the load.

week 1 was about what I expected, and I expect more of it.

if you think it was an aberration because the pats had a good lead, then you should maybe ask yourself if the pats will continue to have good leads...

By saying this are you saying that he will add Morris to the mix, or are you saying you think he's going after a different RB? You did say, "add."

Morris definitely is intriguing if he remains in the mix to get carries. The key question is who will get the goal-line looks when the games are still in question? If Morris becomes this year's Dillon and gets the goal-line carries he will become a very viable RB3 in larger leagues. If you can bank on him getting 8-10 carries a game plus the goal-line looks for a very potent offense that has huge value. This week's game should tell us a lot because it's unlikely the Patriots take a huge lead and coast against the Chargers the way they did against the Jets.

What we all witnessed last year with the Maroney/Dillon combo and what happened last week appears to be the following; It's going to be the dreaded RBBC for Maroney owners. I would not be surpised to see Morris get a dozen carries per game and goal line looks as the season progresses. Maroney is no doubt part of Belichik's game plan but I don't see why he will not utilize Morris as another weapon in order to keep the opposing team on their toes. Many expect The Pats to constantly rely on the air attack but Belichik will certainly use the running game when the Pats will be in the lead.

Maroney had 20 carries last game. Over a full season thats 320 carries. Last year only 10 Rb's had over 300 carries. RBBC? 7 of those 10 RB's w/ 300+ carries finished in the Top 10. RBBC? I'll take that RBBC. I fully understand why most the people who have been w/ FBG's for a long period of time stop posting as frequently around this time of year.

Now that they wont be cheating anymore, i doubt it.

Any opinions from Pats homers? Any more opinions from anyone? :D
Not a Pat's homer, but I agree that Morris is going to be involved way more than Maroney owners want. Like you, I expect 8-10 carries a game for him and some goal-line looks. I don't expect Maroney to average 20 carries a game, (more like 15-17 but it will vary). I think Maroney will not be in the top 12 RBs at the end of the year. It wouldn't surprise me if Morris gets a few more carries as the year progresses.

I fully expect Morris to get 10-15 touches per game, with most of the GL carries. Maroney is not a 300 carry RB, sorry to say. Bill B loves Morris because he's a decisive runner who gets the tough yards. He's also very versatile and will add many rec's this year. Bill B even said himself that he doesn't have a "feature back". Maroney may end up being solid, but he will not live up to his draft position this year.

I think Morris is going to be a significant factor this year. And imo, with the scandal looming and people questioning just how good this team is, dont look for any more low-scoring, conservative wins of the 'old' Pats. This team is going straight for the jugular of teams this year, so expect alot of scoring. But as always, the production will probably be spread evenly, so Im not suggesting Morris himself is going to all of a sudden blow up. But I think this will be the highest scoring New England team we've seen. And if anything does happen to Maroney, Morris would be huge.

I think Morris has some marginal value as a GL back in a TD heavy league, but his biggest value is as a handcuff to Maroney. If Maroney goes down, which would surprise no one, he becomes a very solid RB #2, unless of course the Pats feel he can't be the feature back. But with Faulk handling 3rd down role, I'm pretty sure he could.

When the free agency period began this year NE had Sammy Morris's agent on the phone at 12:01 am. They had him signed before any other team could even try to arrange an interview. I think he will remain a significant part of the offense.

I'm a Pats homer who picked Morris up on waivers this week as a RB6. I think he remains heavily involved in the offense regardless of Maroney's productivity. That's just the way they do things when they have healthy backs.

Considering Maroney has never carried the load for a full season as a collegian or a pro, there is no reason why the Pats won't continue to use him in a rotation so long as it is productive.

Don't forget, Maroney did breakdown toward the end of the season. There was more than one injury he was dealing with, but the team remained pretty tight lipped about it. If I were the Maroney owner, I would have snapped up Morris just for this reason alone.

Appreciate the homer insight (and all others insight also outside of the New England area).Morris seams like a great "buy" at this point then in your opinion, correct? A Morris owners might be looking to "sell" thinking that the production Morris had last weekend is not something he can expect weekly, but are you saying that it actually is?
